Heh. First time I've seen it. What a beat.

Yes, it is the bad beat of all time. That's what I don't really understand about the movie. Lancey beats the kid with the king daddy of all bad beats; if I were the kid, I'd be licking my chops waiting for another shot at him. I know it was just a movie, and movies are like that sometimes, but I don't see where the kid got outplayed.

Just a side note: they used almost those exact hands in the final hand in the first "Gambler" movie with Kenny Rodgers. I would think the technical advisors would encourage them to be more creative.

Probably an homage. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Actually (just for fun), I'm not so sure Edward G. played it so bad. First two streets he was representing the pair of Queens trying to push the Kid off the tens, plus he had outs to the over-pair. Once the four flush came he was playing 8 outs to the flush, 3 to the straight, 3 to the overpair (although he probably put him on the 2 pair when the first A fell) and 1 card to the nuts. Sure he got two perfect cards to maximize bets, but he still had plenty of outs and only had to fear 4.

(This could all be BS though as I've never played competetive 5 card stud) /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

When I was in New Orleans last month, I stayed at the hotel at which they played the "Big Game," the Lafayette. The check-in clerk never HEARD of the movie, so I clued him in.

No five-card stud at the casino nearby, but hold 'em isn't the main game either! Would you believe 1/2 hold 'em, 1/2 Omaha HIGH ONLY is the "main" game? /forums/images/icons/shocked.gif

In the book by Richard Jessup (yes, it's still in print) they play at the Dorset Hotel in Saint Louis, room 311. (I can find no reference to any such hotel.)

I haven't finished reading the book yet, so I don't know what happens.
