pop = popular and accessible. broad definitions accepted.

outkast - hey ya
beyonce - crazy in love
green day - boulevard of broken dreams
fuel - shimmer
gorillaz - clint eastwood
franz ferdinand - take me out
backstreet boys - i want it that way
kylie minogue - can't get you out of my head
natilie imbruglia - torn
goo goo dolls - iris

Meh, I like it. Minus Fuel that is.

You can probably add "New Slang" by this point. Maybe "Ms. Jackson," "Hate To Say I Told You So," and "Wonderwall" (or "Champagne Supernova").

Jack of Arcades

booo. shimmer's one of my favorite songs ever.

I can agree with champagne supernova, dunno about the others. I'm hesitant to accept ms. jackson because of hey ya, and the others seem a bit too obscure.

I have no clue what's considered popular anymore, but...

Barenaked Ladies - Pinch Me
Hanson - If Only
Will Smith - Gettin' Jiggy With it
Jack Johnson - Flake
Killers - Somebody Told Me
Modest Mouse - The Ocean Breathes Salty
Morrissey - Boy Racer
Radiohead - Karma Police
Britney Spears - Toxic

I don't know if you can call this obscure. This got some serious, serious airplay everywhere.

On that note, let me add that fine old tune by Juvenile...

Weezer - Buddy Holly
Avril Lavigne - I don't know what song, but one of them has to be up there
I'd probably put a mellow 311 song like Amber up there too.

Good post, but I'd change some of the choices.

Hanson I toss up between If Only and MM Bop. If Only's the better song; MM Bop is catchier.
Will Smith I could go with Miami or Just the Two of Us.
IMO if it's Modest Mouse it needs to be Float On, even though it's not their best.
Killers - Mr. Brightside

I want it that way is a great song, though I'm sure my opinon isn't so popular.

in no particular order. Also, I realize I kinda "stretched" the definition of pop

Waterfalls - TLC
This is how we do it - Montell Jordan
Boombastic - Shaggy
superman - goldfinger
California love- 2pac
Too Close - Next
My Way - Usher
Intergalactic - Beastie Boyz
Ride Wit me- Nelly

and my softer (gayer) side wants to include I want it that way - BSB

Jack of Arcades
04-07-2005, 07:12 PM
I can understand your hatred of seven nation army. which i like, even though it's somewhere towards the bottom of my favorite white stripes songs.

but clocks? how in the world can anyone hate that song?

(fwiw, i'd put yellow on the list before clocks, it's more accessible)

Jack of Arcades

I'd accept all your songs as pop. I wouldn't accept them as the best, though.

Is this argument about what the best songs of the past ten years are, or just what the best songs that got heavy rotation in the past ten years are? This was a pretty good song, but I think there are at least one or two tracks I like better on this album alone, which seems like it would disqualify it from a more general competition.

I find something about this strangely hilarious. Perhaps the image of Coldplay being a little too avant garde for the masses.

"Smooth." The sheer popularity of it outweighs certain issues with its quality, most likely.

Jack of Arcades
04-07-2005, 07:31 PM
yes. songs have to be popular and accessible. and by accessible, I dunno what I mean, essentially simple, fun songs

Jack of Arcades
04-07-2005, 07:32 PM
I just think yellow was a more poppy song.

You guys really suck at this.

In no particular order, with my own personal tastes removed from the picture.

Avril Lavigne - "Complicated"
Outkast - "Hey Ya"
Chumbawamba - "Tubthumping"
Christina Aguilera - "Genie In A Bottle"
Soul Decision - "Faded"
BB Mak - "Back Here"
Goo Goo Dolls - "Iris"
All 4 One - "I Can Love You Like That"
Boyz II Men - "On Bended Knee"
Bone Thugs N Harmony - "Crossroads"
Eve 6 - "Here's to the Night"
Collective Soul - "The World I Know"
Fountain's of Wayne - "Stacy's Mom"
Green Day - "Boulevard of Broken Dreams"
Jimmy Eat World - "The Middle"
Josh Joplin Group - "Camera One"
Mariah Carey - "Hero"
Michelle Branch - "Everywhere To Me"
O-Town - "All or Nothing"
Real McCoy - "Another Night" or "Run Away" (take your pick I don't care)
Seal - "Kissed by a Rose"
Sugar Ray - "When It's Over"

Sorry The White Stripes and Coldplay, although popular, are not pop. My list's only flaw is a few of these may go back further than 10 years.

Red Hot Chilli Peppers - "Under the Bridge"

[/ QUOTE ]

This is more than 10 years old, but is awesome enough that it deserves mention. And if you're going to take the White Stripes and Coldplay to task for not being pop, I think you should probably take Outkast off of your list, though Hey Ya is also an excellent song.

Schneids
04-07-2005, 08:01 PM
Yeah I wasn't really going for my personal favs though (in the case of Under The Bridge it is one of my favs); I interpretted the OP as looking for which songs received the most airplay and were generally well-received within the majority of the masses.

gumpzilla
04-07-2005, 08:05 PM
I think if we were going for such things, there would be a lot of factual evidence (Billboard charts, etc.) that could probably lead to very little debate. The subjective angle is what makes it fun.

The three coldplay songs mentioned, "Clocks," "Trouble," and "Yellow" are most definitely pop.

"Last Nite" and "Seven Nation Army" are most certainly great pop songs. They're catchy, simple, and clean, and the latter certainly received a lot of airplay.
