Paul Wellstone killed in a plane crash. web page (http://www.cnn.com/2002/ALLPOLITICS/10/25/plane.crash.minn/index.html)

No, no Ashcroft jokes about this one. Obviously I wanted Wellstone to lose as he is literally supported by socialists, but no jokes or anything. You don't wish this on people. This could make things very interesting though. I wonder who will get put on the ballot. (Yes I think replacements are fine in the event of death.)Senator Ventura as a democrat????? Nah, but things will be interesting.

Not to be like eLROY in responding to my own posts, but I remembered some possibilities and thought of some more reading some of the coverage on Senator Wellstone's death. The Senate may have an important session after the election this year. It was possible for the Democrats to keep control for next term but be in the minority for the remainder of the session, before Sen. Wellstone was killed. How? Well our Senator pointed out to us at a recent fundraiser that the republican was looking good against Carnahan in Mo. (You insert the Ashcroft joke here.) Because she was appointed only until the next election, if Carnahan loses, her opponent can be immediately seated and not wait until January. Weird huh? Now Jesse can, but doesn't have to appoint a successor to Wellstone. Say he doesn't and Carnahan loses. Now the Republicans have a couple of seats. They can swap out all the committee chairmen and get some stuff done. This could even be a critical window for slammed through judicial appointments. I doubt a Supreme Court justice would step down in the middle of their court term, but stranger things have happened. You could have the Senate switch majorities 3 times with only one election cycle. Thanks Jeffords. And who might Jesse appoint if he does appoint somebody? He said he wouldn't appoint himself. I don't think Randy Moss is old enough.

HDPM,

How about Hulk Hogan for a replacement?

As far as wrestlers go, wouldn't Verne Gagne be perfect. He is more statesmanlike than Hulk and is from Mn. isn't he? If he's still alive maybe he can use the Gagne Sleeper on somebody in the Senate. /forums/images/icons/tongue.gif

Very good HDPM, I used to love watching Verne Gange wrestle on Saturday afternoons when I was a youngster (on TV). They televised from the Chicago Amphitheater or something like that. He was one of my favorites along with the original Gorgeous George and Hercules with the handlebar moustache.

Verne Gagne? I almost fell asleep just hearing the name again. Just don't say the name Greg Gagzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz... Wha?

Is this the type of respect Wellstone deserves? We've turned this topic into a wrestling thread.

Wellstone's death is obviously a huge loss for the liberal cause. I don't think we'll see another Senator elected who is as far left as Wellstone for quite a while.

Promise me this is true Dynasty. His death is certainly a sad ocassion for his family but his departure from the Senate can only be good for the country as a whole. I wish it had been simply through an election loss and not in such a tragic manner.

Losing a gentleman and a scholar like Dr. Wellstone from the ranks of the Senate is never good for the country.

Easy Dynasty. The political wheels were turning in high places before the body cooled down. That's the nature of the political game and one good reason to avoid getting in as a player. Nobody is dissing Wellstone, but the possibilities of Jesse making Senate appointments in this political climate call for speculation. So don't get too upset even if we talk about old wrestlers. Wellstone was extremely liberal, especially to those of us who view even most Republicans as tax and spend liberals. But Wellstone was respected. He stood for his convictions without fraud or scandal. He was no Toricelli or Clinton.

kong you are so right. and the worst thing for the country is to have any one party dominate. the special interest things that happen will gag a maggot the size of haystakes calhoon.
