What are your favorite beers?

Here are some of mine:

- Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA (Samuel Smith India Ale was replaced by this as my favorite IPA)

- Moose Drool is a good brown ale

- Hacker Pschoor is a good weiss, but i'm looking for others

- Guiness is an OK stout

- Negra Modelo is a good Mexican beer

Schneider-Weisse is the best weizen I've ever had, but I'm not sure you could get it outside of Bayern, much less in the States. The only decent weizen I've had here is Weihenstephaner draft.

Aside from that, IPAs are my favorite type of beer, so more suggestions of those would be great.

Oh, just about anything by New Belgium Brewery is great, if you can get your hands on it.

BJ's Chicago Pizza makes good brews. Their Piranha Ale is tops

Spaten Oktoberfest delicious too.

I used to really like Stone Brewing Co beers. They're good in small doses, like 3 22 ouncers of Double Bastard.

its actually piraat, and yes its heavenly. in that vein, biere du boucanier and goudon carolus XXX are also great.

however, my personal favorites are belgian browns, particularly XXs and XXXXs. bornem XX is a great introduction, i love maredsous 8, and latrappe XXXX was great until they lost their trappist designation, but the holy grail is the achel kluis.

i find all three styles of chimay to be overrated.

Mine was a softer one but it was 1 month with a group of other kids (all fuckups) where we were supposed to hike around all day along some mountains and then sleep out in the woods. Thanks to the strong hurricanes though, I had minimal time spent sleeping out in the woods but we hiked a lot. We also had wicked gross meals (the name's escaping me, some 3-4 letter thing that the army gets while in the field but our's were from 1991 and therefore very gross). We did do some cool stuff though, like rock climbing. The staff were alright as well. It wasn't that bad and was definetly +EV for me as it got me back on the right track. Some one's are wicked bad though. They can get up to 6 months, purely in the woods, rice and lentil as the only food, very mean staff (that are allowed to beat you I have heard). I'm glad that I wasn't to the point where I would've gone to those.

Chili-Mac was good. I could eat the chicken tetrazeeni. The rest were unstomachable though. I got to the point where I only ate the nutri-grain bar and gave away the rest. There was pink lemonade mix, pudding mix, crackers, pot tart type thing, meal, and nutri-grain if i remember correctly.

I wasn't too popular in the wilderness and every day we'd have "group leaders" so they would always give me the shitty one's too. Whenever I was leader, I got bad luck and there were no chili-mac in the box. SFG.

by style:

ALES

IPA- the greatest of all beer forms- I have several reccomendations:

for the hop lovers out there:
Anderson Valey IPA- "man, that's got BITE!"
Hop Juice- the name says it all
LaConer IPA- really hard to find outside of washington state, buit this beer is the very definition of an IPA- a true monster at 7.2%, it will make you go 'ahhh....'
Boundry bay ReefNetter

Stout:
Obsidian by dechutes brewery- black as midnight, strong (6.9% by vol) and just a little roasty, mmm-mmm-good

Amber:
Fish Tale Organic Amber is the best amber beer on the market right now, IMO.

Scotch Ale:
If you can find it, Boundry Bay Scotch is, IMO, one of the top two or three beers in the world, any style. it's amazingly smooth and flavorful, the cascade hops and long brewing cycle make it very strong, sweet without being creamy, and, if you're not careful, it will ROCK your ass.
McEwans is O.K, too, i geuss.
Pike St Brewery Kilt Lifter is another good one

Belgian:
de dolles brewers (the mad brewers)
Chimay blue label
La Fin du Monde
Hoegarden- white ale (Vit). first sip: "hmmm..." by the last sip, you're trying to suck the last drops out of the bottle. very impressive, and the last traditional white beer being brewed.

LAGERS
i don't like lagers, generally, but there are a couple i have to reccomend:

St Pauli Girl- it's a little run-of-the-mill, but is so drinkable and has such a clean finish (if you can find a case that hasn't been skunkified by flourescent light) that it deserves a mention.

Harp. the other night i had like 5 PBRs and then a Harm. damn! big difference. good for black and tan, too.

Pilsner Urequell- the original clear pils, first brewed in the 14th century and still the standard by which all other pilsners should be judged.

PBR. for 1$/pint, how can i say no?

There are much better Belgians trappists than Chimay, ie Rochefort, Westvletern, and Westmalle. Chimay is the easiest to get in the US though, and still good.

One of my favorite beers I've had (only once though, sadly), was Rodenbach Grand Cru.

nope, chimay makes ales, as do all trappist breweries. i did find an unsigned review (http://www.onlyfinebeer.co.uk/productDetails.php?Id=138) which likened the chimay XXX to a lager, but i dont really agree with it. it certainly is a pale beer, but so are all triples. aside from my not liking it as much as many other triple/golden/strong ales i dont recognize it as more similar to lagers.

I've had the 60 minute IPA. Very good. I need to have the 60, 90 and 120 all at the same time for a proper taste comparison.

Don't we have this thread about once a month?

Franziskaner = Spaten, no?

[/ QUOTE ]

no. franzi is known mostly for their wheat ales, spaten for lagers. they are different breweries, both in germany.

Newcastle.
Samuel Smith's Nut Brown Ale.
Goose Island Demolition is nice.

I had a beer once called Sheaf Stout (Australian). I remember liking it. It was an oddly sweet and bubbly stout in a big-ass can. I haven't seen it again. I wonder whether anyone else has tried it.

What he said.

I'm not a big beer guy anyway, but I'm a big fan of local beers or various German imports. Miller Lite and High Life are neutral... they aren't enjoyable but I don't dislike them either. Bud Light, Corona, and most of the shitty beer drank by fellow college kids really make me want to vomit. I generally stick to the Spotted Cow if I'm not drinking to get drunk. If I'm already drunk and I'm winding down the evening on beer, then I don't really care what I'm drinking as I'm already well on my way to being plastered.

OK, so while I'm sure they were started as separate breweries, Franziskaner is owned by the Spaten guys.

It really depends, I don't quite have a favorite beer but my top 3 are: Gordon Bierch Golden Export, Hefeweizen, and St. Pauli's girl.

As you can tell, I enjoy light beer. I cannot for the life of me why people like extremely dark beer or pale ale's.

Although, right now I'm surrounded by 6 empty cans of Milwaukee's Best light, so I am a long way off from good beer.

I reckon a number of other Aussie beers rate a mention here. Be very surprised if any of these are available overseas, but if any of the OOT crowd find themselves downunder, I'd highly recommend the following:

Mountain Goat, both the Hightail and Pale Ales
Holgate, especially the Old Pale Ale
Southwark Premium, I've had the White a couple of times also, it's good too
Little Creatures - the Pale Ale is great and the Pilsner even better
Blue Tongue
St Arnou - they do a range, but they're all good
Redback (better on tap than out of a bottle imho)
James Squire Golden Ale (a seasonal beer only, but it rocks)

"Schneider-Weisse is the best weizen I've ever had, but I'm not sure you could get it outside of Bayern, much less in the States. The only decent weizen I've had here is Weihenstephaner draft."

You can get it bottled in London fairly easily.

One of my favorite beers I've had (only once though, sadly), was Rodenbach Grand Cru.

Guinness
Leffe Blonde
Leffe Brune
Negra Modelo
Rodenbach
Schneider Weisse
Adnams Broadside
Kriek (girly Belgian fruit beer /images/graemlins/blush.gif)
Jupiler (bog standard Belgian lager, delicious though)
Duvel
Bacchus (weird Belgian beer I've only ever found in one bar)
Quite enjoy a Corona on a hot summer day.

While the majority of darker beers tend to be very malty or roasty (is that a word?), it's actually a small percentage of the total grain that's responsible for a beer's color. A 5 gallon batch of a pale yellow beer takes about 7 pounds of malt. Simply adding 4 ounces of a dark roasted malt will give a dark beer with very little difference in taste.
