The conventional wisdom regarding bankrolls for small stakes hold-em seems to be that you have to have a bankroll of at least 100 times the big blind to be able to play effectively. I was wondering how this is calculated in a mathematical sense. Also, do the same requirements hold true online? Thanks.

It's actually 300 times the big bet around here. This is because even winning players will have 200 big bet downswings.
