please recommend me a modern big band that I can sample via the internet. I love Maynard Ferguson's band and anything similar would be great. Also, if they have a guitarrist that you can actually hear that would be pretty sweet too. Anyway, just recommend me all of the big bands you know (not orchestras etc. I just want jazz for those unfamiliar with big band music)

Are you trying to make more people mad by calling big band music jazz?

I'm not looking for the string of big band music from the 30's that's incredibly upbeat and blaring all the time that you're referring to. I'm looking for the modern big bands like maynard ferguson that are clearly rooted in jazz.

the Mingus Big Band and Vanguard Big Band are great. I've seen both and recomend them highly. I used to be a Jazz Sax major so I know a thing or two about these things

The Mingus Big Band is great (i just saw them last week), but if your not so set on having it be modern then I think it's hard to beat later-era Duke Ellington.

Artie Shaw, Cab Calloway, and Duke Ellington come to mind when I think Big Band, but they've been dead a long time. Modern big bands? That sound died in like the 40's, didn't it?

There's that guy from that 80's band the Stray Cats who's now doing the big band schtick in Vegas and late night talk shows.

And who's that guy everyone is calling the new Sinatra, damn I can't remember his name...in his 30's or so, piano player. He does big band numbers all the time. Sheesh, wish I could remember his name. He did an awful movie with Sigourney Weaver, playing the psycho killer whose motivations seemed to be designed by a committee of untalented screenwriters.

Oh yeah, Nelson Riddle, back when Sinatra was alive, was Sinatra's bandleader, arranger, or whatever.

you should definitely check out Maria Schneider's big band....the writing is incredible and the players are mostly modern New York cats......Ben Monder is her guitarist and he's featured on several pieces.....

check out bob brookmeyer. also I second coltrane's recommendation about maria schneider's band, she's my favorite composer ever.

also, dave holland's big band just put out a new record, "overtime". they're really cutting edge and all top shelf musicians.
