"A Monkey playing the system is +EV in the WSOP ME." - Paul Phillips.

Is this true? How big of an exaggeration is this? How bad do the guys playing the WSOP suck, in general? How many other big tourneys are even near as soft as this?

I didn't think they allowed lower level primates in the casinos.

Oh wait....I guess I HAVE seen Mike Matusow at the main event.
Nevermind.

Not funny. I'd say nice try but it wasn't.

well - like him or not - the fact is you wish you were as good a poker player as Mike.

I don't get this. Is PP comparing himself to a Monkey when he states" Monkey....ME"? If so I think that the Monkey is a -EV. But I need more of the quote to be sure.

It amazes me how quick people are to diss someone on here. It was a retarded comment that he made, and the fact is, like him or not, Mike is a better player than just about everyone on 2+2. got that Slick!!!

Tell that to Greg Raymer and a few others that post here that I'm sure Mike M. would rather see playing at another table. Unless of course he's just plain stupid.

that is why I said just about everyone. I'm aware who posts on here. Barry Greenstein, Raymer, Harman, and a few others that actually make their living playing poker.

What is "the system"?

The first rule of the system is you do not talk about the system.

get a grip...it was just a joke...and has Tyler pointed out, not a very good one.

I do think that Paul's comment that the system actually would be +EV at the WSOP ME is interesting.
Curious if DS would agree on that since it is his system afterall. Paul should be more familiar with the general caliber of competition at the WSOP than David though.

It is a preflop all-in strategy that DS has made up in his book, TPFAP (Tournament Poker for Advanced Players) based on stack size and number of players left to act.

He didn't mean that the system is EV+. He was exagerating making the point that the WSOP ME was very easy.

It is soft from his point of view compared to to other $10K tournaments. It is probably a little tougher than the $640 MTTs on Party.

The fact that the system does not allow limps behind limpers means it is at a big disadvantage to the better players.

Yeah remember that great move with 27 off to a raise and reraise lol. I don't think the objective was to make money it was to show how big a man he his. But turned out to show how big a dope maybe.

Hate to say this, but Mike is almost assuredly a better player than Greg is, and I think a TON of Greg's game and very little about mike as a person. But that guy can flat-out play.

I am guessing Paul Phillips was serious when he said the system would be +EV. However, all that means is that if there are 5,000 people in the ME, then someone playing the system would have a greater than 1 in 5,000 chance of winning. However, most of the good NL pro's would have an even greater chance of winning the main event than the system. However, just because the system is +EV, does not mean it will ever by actualized. A person could go there whole life playing +EV in the main event, and still never even make the $$, much less win the damn thing. It is sort of like a hypothetical situation where you are playing the lottery when the jackpot is so big you are getting the correct odds to play it.

How many world series events had he played? He plays most or all of them every year. 2 isnt the most amazing accomplishment. Sometimes he does something very stupid and gives all his chip away in one hand when necessary. See wsop nl table with phillips and dan n. last year.

It was actually after a limp and a raise. He read the raiser (Carlos M.) right but forgot about the limper (Henry N. with KK).

I have not seen the hand of which you are referring so I won't comment on the play. I do however find your comment interesting. He "forgot" about the limper. You were being facetious, right?

Yes. That was a well thought out question by the way.

Smoothcall

Yes it may have been a call and raise. But the point was it was stupid play given his chip position and the players remaining.

"However, all that means is that if there are 5,000 people in the ME, then someone playing the system would have a greater than 1 in 5,000 chance of winning."

It doesn't mean that at all. There is more than one place paid at the WSOP.

No, that was his quote. Nowakowski had been making all sorts of weird plays at that table, so it wasn't that outlandish to under-respect his UTG limp.
