View Full Version : Atlantic City Questions

Hi there everyone, I'm a serious holdem' player from Canada and would like to take a road trip to the great Atlantic City sometime next month. I was just wondering exactly which casinos are the best for poker in AC and which offer the best comps for poker players. Which are the most affordable hotels in the area? Can someone tell me what the exchange is over there for Canadian currency? It would also be great if any of you could tell me what you think of the city and the casinos there. Any info is greatly appreciated so thanks in advance.

I'll answer the first two topics before I get ready for work.

The Tropicana and the Taj Mahal are the only AC casinos with serious poker. (I believe Bally's and the Sands have a very little bit of stud.)

Hotel rates in the fall/winter should be quite reasonable. (In the summer they're high; in August, when everyone on the Eastern seaboard wants to be here, they're ridiculously high.)

I've stayed at the Tropicana and I've stayed at crummy, cheap places (which are still hideously expensive in August), and I'd vote for the Tropicana. Not that it's *that* great a hotel, but the carpet isn't sodden and doesn't squish when you walk on it, and there are no bullet holes in the walls (both features of the nearby Ascot Motel). Plus, of course, you're right there in Poker Central.

More later.

I was at the Taj on Sunday. Played some $3-$6 Hold 'em. Fairly loose table. No complaints. +$98 for just under three hours.

Check exchange rates at http://www.bloomberg.com/markets/currency/currcalc.html

Today it's $1.5666 Canadian to $1.00 US. Just use ATMs, not currency exchanges. The vig there'll kill you.

From what I recall, you are a middle limit hold 'em player. If this is the case, the best choice for you is The Taj Mahal. On weekends, there are multiple 10-20, 15-30, 20-40, and higher hold em games. The action is great, esp. on Friday and Saturday nights. I was in a 10-20 on Saturday that literally played like a 2-4 game. Put on your seatbelt and bring lots of $100 bills. When you get to the Taj, get a Taj Card and hand it to the floorman when you get in a game. You wil get $2 per hour for 10-20 and higher ($1 for 5-10 and below). This money is not redeemable for cash, but can be used at most of the hotel's restaurants and for rooms. The rake at low limits is 10% to $4. At 10-20 and higher, there is a time charge instead. $5 per half hr at 10-20, $6 per half at 15-30, $7 per half at 20-40. You will probably want to visit the Trop for completeness...it is an interesting room, and has a quieter, club-like atmosphere. Their signature hold em game is the "pink game", a 7.50-15 game using only pink $2.50 chips (so raising the turn means u toss in 12 chips lol). It is chip stacking madness, and is quite wild. On weekends, there is sometimes a 10-20-30 hold em game (30 on the river), and if u like stud...5-10-15, 15-30-45, and 15-30 stud8 go often. Also there is usually a 5-5 Pot limit Hold Em game. Good luck, and let me know before you go. If it's a weekend, I'll probably see you there =). As for Poker Rate rooms, call 1-800-72 Poker for details about Taj Rooms (M-F, 9-5). If it's over Thksgiving though..forget it, you won't get a room. It may be tough for you to get a poker rate bc u have no established play. Cheap hotels can be found outside of AC in nearby Absecon and about 15 mins out on the highways. Check out the Sheraton out of town (NOT in town)...I believe it's like 50 a night. Good luck.

The Trop also has player cards for the poker room. They even put your photo on it. The pink chip game is usually pretty good.

I was in Atlantic City last weekend. The place to find action is surely the TAJ. on saturday night, there was about 60 tables going. I played in a 10-20 game that was 10 times easier than what we used to play in Akwesasne!

There was 2 10-20 tables going and some 15-30 20-40 and higher game up to 150-300 if youre interested /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

However, i kinda disliked the dealers. They werent fast enough (well faster than AMC obviously!) and i really hate it when i pay time and the game is stalled because they are bringing chips to the table. They really should have a cage in the poker room.

Overall, i really preferred my poker experience at Turning Stone Casino near Syracuse. There, the dealers were excellent and there was a chip runner as well as a cage. There were NO delays. Sure there was only 1 and sometimes 2 10-20 half kill game going, but it was so juicy the 2 weekends i went there that u didnt needed another table. Loooooose passssive it was, i really liked it. On a side note, the games at the TAJ were also loose passive. Obviously, all games looks LP to me when i play B&M since im used to pokerstars T&A games.

TS room is a new 15 tables rooms and i really suggest it to you.

Lodging:

In AC i stayed at somers point, 15-20 minutes south of AC. Cost me $44 on a saturday night in a nice econolodge. Prices in AC were all over 150... didnt played enuf to request a poker rate.

In TS, u can ask for a poker rate of $75 in their very nice hotel. If youre cheap (I am!), u can get a room in syracuse (20-25 minutes) for $25,49 in a soso Motel 6.

1 last thing: Beware of road 87 as u prolly know. It was so icy last weekend. A ton of cars got surprised with their summer tires and some found the woods!

Just email me if u have more questions!

Jeff

Unfortunately I never ended up going. Thanks to those who responded with help. I will however be going to Las Vegas for the first time in December. That should be lots of fun.
