Every Catholic Cardinal flies into Rome and is sequestered until they choose by majority vote a member among them. Every time they have a vote, afterwards, they burn the ballots. If they've chosen someone, they throw the ballots on some type of wood that burns white. If they haven't come to a decision, they burn the ballots with something that will smoke black. The people outside look for the smoke as a signal.

Yeah.

That would be hilarious. Do you know how many racist Catholics there are? In the U.S. alone? This would be so funny seeing how they deal with this.

This statement if fundamentally biased and inaccurate. If there are a lot of racist Catholics, there are a lot of racist Jews, Mormons, and a hell of a lot more racist Southern Baptists (a la Bob Jones University). And yes, I think that the next Pope will be African. 2nd most likely is Italian and Hispanic (South American) is a close 3rd.

How is it fundamentally biased? I have been a catholic my whole life for one. Secondly, I was not trying to imply that there are more racists within catholicism than any other relgion (although it may have seemed thay way). There are many religions that would have interesting reactions to all of a sudden having their symbolic leader being a race they are uncomfortable with.

Catholicism is one of them.

Sorry, that is kinda the way that it came across, but I felt that it was a biased statement simply because any change within any group will make some members uncomfortable, and it's kind of unnecessary to point out the fact that it applies to Catholicism.

I think there is a huge section of cardinals that want to see the pope come from some place in the "developing world." The # of catholics are growing in Africa faster than anywhere else. The other consideration is somewhere in Latin America as (I may be mistaken), but I believe more of the world's catholics live there than any other region. Oddly enough, many cardinals would like the pope to be older (ie, His reign would be shorter, John Paul II had one of the longest reign's in the history of the papacy and I believe the average is about 7 years).

Even more odd, that's the same reason that they picked John Paul II.

There are 183 Cardinals:

38 Italians

16 from nations in Africa (including northern africa)

30 from countires in latin America (basically anywhere south of the Rio Grande. Technically Brazilians aren't Hispanic but I've included them in this group)

21 from nations east of India (including India) including 4 from Australia and New Zealand

The rest are from Europe, USA, Canada, and the middle east. By sheer numbers alone I would think "Other" would be the best vote, assuming they just picked out of a hat.

no way the next pope is black...just won't happen. the church of course wants people to think otherwise...just like america.

hopefully our lifetime will see some of these cultural boundries fall...but it's more likely to be within our kids lifetime.

I think it is likely that the next Pope will not be black, but I don't think racism will have anything to do with the selection.

trying2learn
04-02-2005, 07:31 PM
i wouldn't say racism DIRECTLY will be the reason...we agree on that. however, indirectly i think it's probably naive to think it doesn't have an effect.

Yeah.

[/ QUOTE ]

In the initial balloting, a 2/3 majority is required to elect a Pope. After a certain number of ballots, however (apparently ~30), the conclave can vote to allow the new Pope to be elected by a simple majority.

Great, let's get a black Pope so the church can do an even better job of reaching Africans so they can convince them that condoms are evil.

I hope it's some dumb irritating wop that Africa will hate.

On the same subject a friend of mine worked last summer for an organization called students for the world. He was doing AIDS relief in South Africa, Swaiziland (sp) and Lesotho. He was telling me that one of the biggest stumbling blocks to preventing the spread of AIDS was Abstinence Only ideas that were being spread within parts of these societies that were POLYGAMOUS! This 19th century silly foreign policy idea of "Christianizing the Savages" is just awful and needs to end.
