View Full Version : OMFG: I just got recalled to active duty

I'm in total shock. This cannot be happening.

I got a certified letter today from the Department of Defense. I'm to report to the Memphis MEPS Monday, April 25, for in-processing. I'M BEING RECALLED FOR ACTIVE DUTY.

I'm 38 years old! I've sailed over 300 pounds! This has to be a horrible mistake!

I took the letter down to the local recruiting station, to see if there was anything they could tell me (that's the only local contact I could think of). The recruiter looked it over, and asked me if the letter was correct where it said my MOS was 98-G when I was a soldier. I told him that was correct.

98-Golf is "Electronic Warfare Specialist, Signal Interceptor/Operator". My job was to strap on some headphones in a tent in the DMZ, and listen in on the North Koreans. The job required a Top Secret security clearance, which was granted to me after an extensive investigation. I spent a year in the DoD's Foreign Language school in Monterey, CA learning Korean. From there, the plan was to send me to Fort Huachuca in Arizona to learn about the radio equipment, then on to Korea.

But the army booted my fat ass out just before I graduated the Korean school. I was honorably discharged, and told that they reserved the right to recall me to active duty.

BUT THAT WAS TWELVE YEARS AGO!

The recruiter told me that he has been told to keep an eye out for unusually smart applicants, and to steer them toward the language school MOS's. Half the kids who go to the recruiter looking for a job--especially in time of war--are there because they can't write their own name. It's very rare that they stumble into someone smart enough to handle the rigors of a 52-week crash course in a foreign language. I remember my original recruiter telling me this, how I had put up the highest test scores he had ever seen, and he knew I'd be perfect for Monterey's Foreign Language school.

And Arabic translators are in HUGE demand right now. The army is desperate for anyone who can put two Arabic words together. The re-enlistment bonuses offered to Arabic linguists are higher than any other MOS, including medical, including JAG.

"Wait a minute, sergeant," I interrupted. "Arabic? I went to the Korean school." Not to mention that I've forgotten 99% of it anyway....

"If you got one of those letters, and you're a 98-Golf, you're going back to Monterey." To learn Arabic. He asked if I did extremely well in the Korean school, and sure enough, I was tops in my class. He asked if my clearance ever ran into any snags, and they had not.

I can't freaking believe this. I feel like that Jack Ryan character in those Tom Clancy books I love so much. He keeps thinking he's finished, and the government keeps calling him back into service.

I was young and single my first go-round. Now I'm 38, married, three kids, wonderful home life, two of the kids started Little League this week for the first time...

"What about this?", I asked the recruiter, showing him two fistfuls of belly, with plenty left over.

"They're not going to worry about that this time. You're on the fast-track. Besides, you'll lose a lot of that in Basic."

Basic. TRAINING??? You can't be serious! Look at my knees! You saw me walk in here--and I'm using the word "walk" generously.

"Oh, it won't be like a normal Basic Training. It'll be a bunch of you older linguist guys. It'll still be demanding, but not the stuff that the kids go through. No gas chamber or anything."

Hell, I'd choose the gas chamber every day, over running a quarter-mile.

I'm still in total shock.

How is that possible? your active reserve status should have expired long ago? Mine was waived cuz I was on the fat boy program. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

I don't think they can really do this, unless you signed up for reserve or gaurd. I would talk to a lawyer because I would think that they would need to recruit you as a civilian and you would be making civilian pay for over there (which is kick-ass and tax-free)

youtalkfunny
04-01-2005, 01:20 AM
Drastic circumstances, I suppose. Like I said, that language school is college-level stuff, and the only people who walk into a recruiters' office in time of war are the unemployable.

When I was discharged, they mentioned something about reserving the right to recall me--but that was only supposed to be for a few years.

I imagine they're so hard up for linguists, and trainable people, that they're amending the rules. The number of people who can handle the class load, and get the clearance, and who knows what else. Like I said, I was tops in my Korean class, and the clearance went without a hitch.

Not to mention my obesity kept me from ever being promoted, so they get me at E-1 pay.

I already don't like where this is going.

If you're trying to say that people who support those who volunteer for the military are hypocrites, then [censored] off. Its been said a million times that they're supporting a volunteer military, and respecting the often-dangerous job they have to do. If you're calling them (us, since I'm one of those people, but I drive an Explorer) cowards, or anything else, you need to seriously stifle yourself.

If I'm mistaken, I'll take that back quick. But keep your inane comments to yourself.

EDIT: Since I failed to say it already to the OP, good luck. Not everyone's actually brave enough to do it in the first place, and while I understand your not wanting to go back (apparently rightfully so), I wish you the best in whatever circumstances arise.

However, please explain this:
"But the army booted my fat ass out just before I graduated the Korean school. I was honorably discharged , and told that they reserved the right to recall me to active duty."

Also, wouldn't they have Americans with arab grandparents that they could just send to Basic and then ship out to the sandlot with 52 weeks at Monterrey?

Anyway, I too had my recruiter crying. He wanted me to become an aircraft electronics repairman (20 years ago). Said jobs liek that are hard to fill. I said nope, I'm going 11B with Airborne School and RIP. I wanted to be John Wayne.

"But the army booted my fat ass out just before I graduated the Korean school. I was honorably discharged , and told that they reserved the right to recall me to active duty."

[/ QUOTE ]

Everyone kept asking me, "Are you SURE it's honorable?" Yup, says so on my DD214.

I'm 5'7". When I walked into the recruiters office, I was 25 years old, and weighed 250. He told me I had to get down to 209 before I could go to Basic, and after Basic, I'd have 6 months to get down to 174. If I wasn't there in 6 months, I'd be put on the overweight program (nutrition counseling and extra PT). After six months of that, if I still wasn't down to 174 (or alternatively, passable body fat percentage), I would be honorably discharged.

I really wanted to stay. I loved the life (of course, all I saw was Monterey, which is the sweetest station in the world--When Goldie Hawn spoke to the recruiter in "Private Benjamin", he showed her pictures of the yachts and condos in Monterey).

On that fateful day, my CO asked me if I was shirking in an effort to get discharged. I pointed out my consistantly rising PT scores, which were higher than anyone else in the company who had started Basic Training the same time I had. I worked very hard at it. I really wanted to stay.

He agreed that I wasn't shirking. "It's too bad," he said. "We're losing a good soldier."

He said if I *had* been shirking, he wouldn't have discharged me. How's that for army logic?

[ QUOTE ]
Also, wouldn't they have Americans with arab grandparents that they could just send to Basic and then ship out to the sandlot with 52 weeks at Monterrey...

[/ QUOTE ]

I imagine there would be security clearance risks there.

Also, I should point out that of the kids in my Basic Training class who went to Monterey, half went to learn Korean, and the other half went to learn SPANISH. I would not have thought the army had a hard time finding people fluent in spanish. In fact, one Marine in my Korean class was fluent in Spanish.

That one actually makes sense, though. It is so tough to find recruits who are smart enough to handle the Catagorie Four languages (the toughest ones, like Korean and Arabic), that his Spanish fluency was not as important as his Korean potential.

To be fair, you don't have to be on the front lines to show your support for those who have chosen their profession in the military.

Nobody goes around thumping their chest about their flags or magnets on their cars. Its symbolic - its because we AREN'T over there doing the fighting. To suggest that we're ingenuous or hypocritical is ignorant.

I think those people are much more valid targets. For one, they're not risking their lives or having their whole routine uprooted. Also they're driving Explorers, which if not socially irresponsible is in any case vulgar and ridiculous.

I mean, if you literally don't learn the language, and (reasonably) claim "hey my brain isn't what it was 12 years ago"...don't you cease to be useful?

Yes, I actually learn a lot in OOT. I try to skip a lot of the threads that have an obvious lack of content. This thread looked like it had content or meaning full purpose, but didn't.

For threads with content, see any computer thread astro posts in, any global warming thread, any thread nothumb posts in that has to do with street smarts, dating advice threads, morality threads on how to deal with a cheating......

I could go on and on.

Dude- I was in the exact same job as you down to the language. My discharge was honorable as well, but it was for a sleep disorder. I guess maybe that's what's stopping them from pulling me back.

At this time when our intelligence services are in desperate need of translators, just a few days ago 8 Arabic linguists were discharged for being gay. So, you could always go that route ..

I don't really understand this. A few of my friends are in that same job right now (for those of you who don't know, it's a job with a very very small population), and they're all being allowed out in a few months. Good luck and keep in touch.

Oh, and Sponger, you're a moron.

I imagine they're so hard up for linguists, and trainable people, that they're amending the rules. The number of people who can handle the class load, and get the clearance, and who knows what else.

[/ QUOTE ]Yes, the 2 years of training is no doubt a big consideration, but the reason you got called back this week is because they just passed a law upping the age you can enlist in the military from something like 30 to 38.

I heard on some news report that they are raising the age that they can recall people.

[/ QUOTE ]

They wouldnt do this...thats what the extensive security checking is for! If u have any hereditary links they are WAY less likely to use you unless its a special circumstance and u clear security with flying colors because otherwise these people are a HUGE liability. You are working with things which if leaked could cost lifes, so they are not going to put someone with "ties" to the "enemy" in that job lightly

lolol

I took a break for a few days, and, when catching up, didn't notice the date on the original post.

Very nice job - just enough detail to seem realistic. (I scored a 145 on the D-Lab [Defense Language Aptitude Test -AF cutoff for interpreters and Intelligence Interrogators, etc, is 70, CIA cutoff is 90] during Basic Training, and had daily meetings for two weeks w/ a bunch of senior NCOs and officers, trying to get me to switch from "Open Electronics" to "Open General," so they could send me to Monterey. So, I do know how much pressure they put on people who can learn languages. And yes, it is a 52 week course, etc..

Even so, I started a response, about how this had to be BS, as, not only does the military not allow people on the "fat boy program" IN the military - even in this day of edited laws, etc, but, also, last I heard, Monterey was one of the military bases that was closed in the 90's. So, the lovely amount of detail tripped you up. Before I posted it, though, I decided to finish the thread.

Lovely April Fool's joke. One of the best I've seen in years.

youtalkfunny

Thanks, Buk.

Monterey is still going. It was nearby Fort Ord that got mothballed.

You should've went to Monterey. I don't know where you went, or what you did, but for anyone reading this who is in the military: NEVER PASS UP A CHANCE TO GO TO MONTEREY, FOR AS LONG AS THEY WILL LET YOU. I never met anyone who was stationed there, who didn't love it.

The biggest perk about being stationed there (aside from the fact that it's on the gorgeous central California coast) is that the army wants you to concentrate on your studies, so they don't go overboard with inspecting your room, or marching around, or crap like that. Forget about bouncing a quarter on your bedspread--go ahead and throw a big-ass quilt or comforter on your bunk!

I don't remember what I scored on my DLAB, but the recruiter, and the guy at the Boston MEPS who administered the test, both said it was the highest DLAB score they had ever seen (I also put up the highest ASVAB score that recruiter, and all his co-workers, had ever seen).

I don't know about you, but when I walked out of that DLAB test, I walked out with my chin on my chest. I thought I had bombed horrifically. Ten minutes into the test, I gave up. I only half-listened to the tape, and fired up my best guesses. It was probably because I had given up, and totally relaxed, that I scored so well.

The recruiter was waiting in the lobby for me. I apologized to him for his driving me all the way into the city, so I could do so horribly on the test. When he got the results, he asked me, "What were you, busting my chops with all that 'I did terrible' stuff?"

I kept asking, incredulously, "You mean I did GOOD?? Are you sure?"

When I took the DLAB I remeber the language being very latin like. Once I had a resonable declintion pattern and subject series the rest of the test just fell in place. Of course they were looking for people to learn russian and slavic languages at the time. [btw I never did go, but I did get the same highest grade they ever saw line and it rated fairly high on my bs scale]Those aren't too usefull in poker, Korean could be real helpfull though. Arabic and Farsi all but useless.

I thought I failed the DLAB as well. They even told me I failed just to [censored] with me. =] Turns out I got a very high score (compared to most other DLI students).

I'm amazed there's other 2+2 linguists around, but I guess I shouldn't be.
