View Full Version : Unique first names
I'm intrigued by one of a kind unique first names. It must be a cultural thing because it seems blacks have cornered the market, at least for professional athletes. Here are just a few that came off the top of my head.
LaDainian, Plaxico, Laveranues, Edgerrin, Takeo, Lawyer and Samari. Except for the famous athletes who bear these unique names I've never heard of a single other person having the any of these names.

There's either a WR or corner in the NFL named Jeremetrius Butler.
I remember Stu Scott made a joke about it on Sportscenter about how it was a combination of "Jeremiah" and "Demetrius" - he said something like, "you know where he from, right? He from around the way.." with a laugh. it was actually pretty funny.

maybe different first names is a good idea. my high school baseball team had three guys on it named Matt (me included). I was playing first base, Matt2 was at second and Matt3 was in right field. during drills my coach hit a pop fly to short right and called out "MATT!!"

Now we're getting somewhere. This is what I was really curious about. So what you're telling me is that Plaxico, Condoleeza, Laverneus and the other names are common names among blacks.
Voltron87
03-31-2005, 09:09 PM
Common? No. They are not one of a kind however. I know a young black kid named Laverneus.
BTW don't take my post as insulting, I just mean that if you don't come into contact with many young black people, you won't know as many black names. I know more white names than black names, for example. So no, I don't know anyone named Plaxico (ok maybe you've got a unique one there /images/graemlins/grin.gif) but I also don't know that many black people period (at least not relative to the white people I know).

Off the top of my head:
There's an amazingly smart girl in one of my classes named Mae Wang. That has to suck in America.
We don't have too many of those weird names at my school, mostly due to the fact we're in suburbia Atlanta, where standards of living are among the highest for public school students.
Consequently, to be blunt about it, you will find more Todds and Michaels and Davids than Zambukwes and Tayvonerus and Shashawndas.
I have easily the most anglo name in 2+2. I kid you not, my ancestors came off the boats from England.
They have these tests where you can determine what percentage your ethnicity is, and I'd be willing to wager I have >97% caucasian.
No problem, I didn't consider your post insulting at all.
