bear with me im new to this...when betting sports lets just say, NBA for an example-How do you look at the lines? when it says +8 by one team and -8 by another, what does that mean? and if i were to bet on a team that says -8 how would i place that bet? I know nothing about this as you can tell... any help at all would be nice.

Negative numbers mean that a team is favoured to win the game.. Positive numbers mean that a team is favoured to lose the game..

For example, if Team A is -8 and Team B is +8 then team A must win by more than 8 points in order for your bet to win..

If the score is 69 - 60 for team A, then team A has "covered the spread", and won the bet

If the score is 65 - 60 for team A, then team B has covered the spread, and hence B is the winner for betting purposes..

Spreads allow people to bet on games on a more even playing field so that the payoffs can be consistent..

Hope that answers your question..
