So I decided to post this tournament before starting it. I was hoping that it would be interesting. I don’t know if that worked out so well. Mostly I was hoping for a cool heads up at the end, which definitely didn’t materialize. My heads up lately is a little shakey, so I was hoping to get some input on that. this was possibly the only interesting hand of the tournament. i'm not sure, as i haven't looked over the hands closely yet. i thought for a bit about pushing, about raising to ~300, and about miniraising even. part of the reason i decided to not play that hand was that i was leaning towards pushing and a) i don't really like pushing there and b) i thought pushing there would damage my image, while if i didn't, it was likely i could possibly get 2 steals behind the button this lap. you can never be sure about that though i guess. but yeah, i dunno there. it's certainly not an "easy" or "routine" fold. and it probably shouldn't be.

The only hand I would have played differently (if I played my a game such as I would wish it to be) is the nines already commented on. I push... But then my image is usually a bit looser, as well as me playing 50s instead 200s. I can see underpairs calling me. Overcards would be ok as well of course.

The odds of someone having an overpair are about one in six or seven right? (just doing some quick maths in my head). So you'd have to be called by worse hands every now and then to make it +ev. Maybe that wasn't likely.

Hand #9 is very tough. Tens are such a tough hand, and with the large raise, I smell something like jacks. Probably a good fold, but somewhat difficult.

Hand #16 I bet the flop and give up to any resistance. That board likely didn't hit the limper, so bet it and see what happens.

Hand #39 I push with 99 UTG. It looks clear from the other action that you may get a call with an underpair.

Hand #40 I like, in fact I would probably do this with any two cards, provided they have shown that they will limp in with weak hands before.

First thanks for posting this up, I find it very helpful to read others hand histories.

I found it funny that in the first 3 hands had you stayed with them you would of had a boat, two pair, and 3 of a kind. Of course your hands were trash when you did kick them to the curb.

This HH is a very good example of being extremely patient as you were card dead for about 40 hands. QQ was very very good to you in this tourney.

I actually liked the folding of the 99 UTG. Way too many equal sized or higher stacks to navigate through to pick up the blinds. You are almost surely going to get called with a coin flip at best situation, no thanks.

Questoin, are your blind steals usually this straight forward, A5 off was about as bad a hand as I saw you stealing with? Just curious what some hands would be that you would steal with on the button in other tournies.

I do not like the push on hand 39. You have a tight image and are under the gun. You can raise 250-300 and get any decent hands to lay down. If somebody raises all-in you can get away from it --- you are either a large underdog against a bigger pair, or a slight favorite because they have two big overcards.

On hand 56, I would think about minraising with the QQ 4-handed. You WANT somebody to come over the top of you here. If somebody calls your minraise, you can get all their chips if they pair something smaller than your queens. I would also call on hand 24.

Hand 9 (TT level 1) is a spot where I must be leaking.

Is this a no brainer fold because you don't know if one of the limpers might wake up with a push or because you are going to be playing TT for set equity or a combination of those? I guess I would normally call this and if I flop a set or an overpair then it's go time. Silly?

At this level more times than not someone is going to slam your min-raise in the dirt knowing you will fold. What if they call, then you get yourself in a world of trouble on a flop with one over card. Does he have it? Does he not have it?

I still say it was right to fold 99 UTG 8 wide....

I can see why you might get tricky with QQ on the button here. I find min-raises to be so obvious though... Plus he wants Seat 8 out of the hand, only guy who's chip stack that can really hurt him at this point on a fluke flop.

With that many limpers and then a raise to 100, you've got to put villan on an overpair JJ or better. He might have AK but do you really want to deal with AK bluffing a J high flop. 100 chips is a lot to call to try and hit a set at this point in the tourney.

Plus like you said, you don't know what the previous 3 limpers have in mind. Your not even sure your going to see a flop for your $100 if one of those limpers was slowplaying or is maniacal.

The only reason I advocate pushing over raising 2.5 or 3X on the 9's hand is because I don't want to put myself in a tough position with 99. I would rather put the other players to that decision. If I raise 3X and then fold, I've given away 300 chips for nothing, and am now in the BB. If I raise 3X and am called, 99 isn't the easiest hand to play postflop, as there were be at least one overcard most of the time.

So basically it's a push or fold. I would likely play bigger pairs the same way in this blind level with my stack how it is, in order to make my play more difficult to read.

heh. clearly, i'm totally lost wrt my playing of "small" pocket pairs preflop, but this just seemed like too many chips, out of position, level 1, playing for set value, with the chance that lots of people back there decide it's a good time to push to steal the pot. on level 1 with ~1k chips, i'm willing to put in about 75 or so chips if it's reasonable to believe that that's all i'm going to put in, with any pair. i'm really against going much larger, especially when it's possible i'll be seeing a 2 or 3 way flop total, and needing to play for set value.

Well, my response was particularly directed at the other guy whose response was particularly directed at some other guy.

At hand 39 you didn't really have a standard raise.

By the second hand mentioned (#56 ? the QQ), maybe you had established a standard push, but not strongly.

Really I think it is common to say either "I'm going to snap off that minraise" or "That is an obvious monster minraise" based primarily on the hole cards rather than the situation. That was the first time I'd seen both opinions expressed in the same post and I think for both hands it was mostly based on your hole cards.

I hear ya. I'm starting to see that I call too much. And I'm too desparate to get into pots, I think. The 99 hand was instructive for me too. I would have pushed that. Seeing that a good player can fold that hand is useful. Of course I'm not as good at getting good cards when the blinds start moving up as you are so I have to push my small edges /images/graemlins/smile.gif

CAn you just do a search and repalce on all the names and still use the HH.. This wouldn't give away your name and should let the player still work...

Hands I play differently (and there are very few of them):

Hand 16 - lead out for 1/2 to 2/3 of pot

Hand 26 - This is a spot where I'll often try a steal-raise for 2.5 or 3x BB. Folded to you in middle position, blinds are dtarting to get significant, you haven't played a hand in forever. It's certainly not a crime that you folded though. I might make this play a third of the time if the situation presents itself.

Hand 39 - Definitely the most interesting spot in the SNG, I'll generally open-raise for 3x BB here, I'm folding 77, not sure what I do with 88. This may be a leak on my part though - this situation could be worthy of it's own thread (and you'd have a similar dilemma with AQ here).

Hand 56 - Min-raise? Certianly depends how well your opponents know you though. A min-raise could obviously set off warning lights to them.

what part of the rest of it does the replayer need to work? if it needs the hand number, clearly not. if all it needs is the little lead in thing that says the stakes of the game, i can leave that. but i can't leave in the part that says either "game blah" or "now starting game blah." for obvious reasons.

i thought i was stripping out pretty needless crap, but apparently i was wrong.

at some point i'll post something from my non-super secret screen name. maybe for fun i'll post something where a known or unknown 2+2er is in the game too.

Thanks for the post. Very informative. Interesting to see how you played the small pocket pairs, folding them early in the tourney. I like to limp and hope to see a cheap flop and hit a set, but I guess that doesn't happen all that often at the money level you play at. Interesting to see how patient and tight you played.

If I get some free time, I will write a quick little program that you can run that will strip out all names, change the tourament number to something useless and will number the hands from 1 to the end of the tourament..

Don't expect it too soon, but it will make the anonymous posting of touraments easy for everyone. I think that posting entire SNG is of great value... Seeing how the better players play is such a good way to learn.
