canis major is the companion of the gr8 hunter, orion.....to find the dog star....look for 3 stars that form orion's belt follow imaginary line soth...see bright star, that's it...gl /forums/images/icons/grin.gif /forums/images/icons/cool.gif

Right. You'll want to wait until after 2 or 3 AM so it is up high enough to see. Orion is in the southeast, and easily recognized by the 3 stars in a row (his belt). Just look below and to the left of Orion in the direction the 3 belt stars are pointing. If you follow the belt stars in the other direction (up) you will come to an orangish star called Aldebaran in the constellation Taurus the bull. Go a little further in that direction, and you will come to the Pleiades, a star cluster containing hundreds of thousands of stars, though it just looks like a blur with the naked eye. While your looking over there, check out the planet Saturn which is now very bright above Orion, and the planet Jupiter which is even brigher and lower, rising in the east at that hour.

i hate to tell you that sirius is not the brightest star. but is the second brightest.
