When he pushed i was fairly certain he had AK or 2 overcards, this guy would raise less with AA or KK.

is this a good call to gamble this early? or should I wait around and pick up some blinds, etc...

this is one of the areas I'm have difficulty in

Excellent question. Sometimes I think I would prefer to gamble early in a tournament, then after I have invested time playing.

I usually do not gamble in that spot. I fold and wait for a better hand.

yea see im torn between playing like this, generally very aggressive pushing small edges..

however when this strategy does work, i find myself with 10k before the 2nd hour and a very good chance of making the final table, especially in a tournament with 200-300 entrants

nah, I wait. 77 dominated by 88-TT even when he doesnt have AA too often here.

It also dominates 22-66. I'd like the play more with 88 or 99, but I don't think this is as bad a play as many would like you to believe. I'd probably fold here almost everytime, but in a lowish buyin tourney like this sometimes a "go big or go home" strategy early can be how you feel like playing that day.

/images/graemlins/wink.gif thanks. I just think this is a mid PP a lot more often than a low one. It is not HORRIBLE, but it is pretty bad imho. I have made similar calls in 1k+ feild low buyin tournies.

even if you are 80% sure he has AK or 2 overcards?

If you're only 80% sure he has overcards, and the majority of the rest of the time it's an overpair, then it's even EV. I would fold.

how can you be so sure with no read?

TT gives you that extra 5% vs. AK (and so does 99 if it's AQ/KQ/xJ.) It's a good cushion and makes up for the times your read is off so it's a good starting point.

if you have a read, go for it.

Its finally happened the forum is now saying getting it all in with 77 early in a tourney is good....I knew it would come to this.

Do you guys ever not double up in the first 15 minutes and still make a final table??

77?? Dude your read would have to be SOOOO sick to make this a correct move. Online I cant imagine knowing within 80% of certaintly the guy had AKo...it just doesnt make sense logically.

how high of a PP do you need to call this then

1010 is still pretty marginal bc total donkeys love AJ and KQ and I want a decent probabilty of being WAY ahead here since there is some chance Im well behind.

I guess JJ then.

I fold too easily dominated, you don't need to make this call and can wait for a greater edge later on.

i think here you're giving up a significant edge. i think you'll be dominated more times than you're guessing.
