View Full Version : New Orleans/Louisiana

A month ago someone on this forum told me to go to Harrah's in New Orleans for good hold'em games. Well, they have good OMAHA games, but no TEXAS games. I was pretty pissed to make the journey there and find this out.

So, New Orleans has nowhere to play Texas Hold'em. Lake Charles has boring 3-6-12 games that are heavily raked.

Does Baton Rouge have any good games? Does Louisiana just suck for Hold'em?

Harrah's spreads a half Hold'em/Half Omaha game that is extremely beatable on weekends and ealry evening. It can be a wild ride however. When the Jackpots get big enough, they'll spread straight Hold 'em.

Best 3-6-12 games in SW Louisiana are at The Grand Casino in Kinder. All the games are tight and boring during the week as they are filled with local rocks. Weekends are another story. As far as the rake killing you? It always will in just about any low limit game. Step up to the 10-20-40 at The Isle of Capri in Lake Charles or the 10-20 or 15-30 at The Grand in Kinder to beat the rake and see some action. But, if it's low limit you want then on weekends in Lake Charles or Kinder the games are fine.

I agree. I have played at both of these casino's many times over the last 8 months or so and found the games very beatable. I only play on weekends and find there are plenty of loose players that make the games profitable despite the god awful rake ($5max + $1 jackpot drop). Being able to pop for $12 on the end is especially nice and adds a little flavor to the game. Since many of the games are loose-passive your variance can be a little crazy, but if you stick around long enough you'll do fine.

Table selection is key at the Capri. It gets pretty busy in there on the weekends so there's not much you can do when you first get on the list - unless you want to wait for a seat to open up at a live table - but good luck with that. Without a doubt, getting at the right table there is the key. I was there a couple months ago and was at a table where a guy dumped 6 racks in a little less than 4 hours. When I was there last month I played at a stud table where a drunk kid blew through 3 racks in about 45 minutes. Good times...

The Coushatta in Kinder is a little nicer room - not near as smoky - but there's way to much casino noise in there for my taste. The Kinder also runs a $6-12 game pretty regularly but the dealers I talked to there said it's not usually worth playing in as it's normally a rock garden.

I'd play the $10-20-40...if the $40 wasn't on the end. That's a little to expensive for my tastes just yet. /forums/images/icons/tongue.gif

Overall though, Louisiana poker sucks. Deciding which room to play is the lessor of 2 evils, IMHO. We choose the Capri more often than not because it's nice and crowded with better game selection. Although, this time (we are going this weekend) we might try to hit the Coushatta again for a nighttime game. We've usually played over there during the afternoon on the weekends.

If you are heading down there this weekend look me up. Me and my friends stand out like sore thumbs in there. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif We are in our early 30's, clean cut, showered, and are well mannered.

....the best time to play at The Grand Casino in Kinder is the first or third weekend of the month. These are the weekends they have the tournies. Every table in the room will be full with plenty of action all the way from 3/6/12 to 15/30 and even PL. Fridays are slow there, The Isle is better on Friday nights, but Saturday afternoon and night is wild in Kinder on tourney weekends. I'll be at the Isle November 1 and go over to Kinder November 2. /forums/images/icons/wink.gif
