IMO, Donnie Darko is really meant to have multiple interpretations by the viewer. What you really need to do is read the fake book put out at the same time the movie was released, The Philosophy of Time Travel (http://ruinedeye.com/cd/time1.htm).

If you read this or at least parts of this, the movie might make more sense.
