View Full Version : The Favorite Team Thread

Go ahead and post your favorite squads.

My purpose is threefold:

1. I'm curious as to the sports demographics here. I want to see if the fan bases are actually as bizarrely skewed as they appear to be.

2. Everyone has a place to challenge everybody else's allegiances, hopefully preventing every single sports thread from devolving into a "you're not a real fan" piss-fist that nobody wants to read.

3. When your lightly-regarded team wins a title, you can point to this thread to prove to everybody that you were backing them even when they sucked.

I'll start:

NFL: Colts
MLB: Reds
NBA: Spurs
NHL: meh
college football: Notre Dame
college bball: Purdue
college hockey: Cornell
English soccer: Liverpool
International soccer: Ireland

One more thing. No cop-outs in the vein of "I like Team X and Team Y equally." No you don't.

I can honestly care less even if someone claims to be a fan of a team, if they have no real allegiance.

If you are choosing any of these teams over your home team, then I honestly don't view you as a true fan. I dont dislike you, I dont think you cant like team x, but you are not a real fan.

I was born and raised in Philadelphia. I have liked the Eagles, Phillies, Sixers, and Flyers my whole life. And thats it.

That's fine. I've found that people with this attitude are very likely to come from a major metropolitan area. If you grew up in a place that wasn't filled with teams playing at the highest level, you might feel differently.

NFL: AFC / Pats -- NFC / Panthers
MLB: Red Sox (AL) / Cubbies (NL)
NBA: Meh. Grew up a Hornets fan, they left town and suck. I like teams that play good basketball and are fun to watch. I follow the C's somewhat.

NBA: Mavericks
NFL: Cowboys
MLB: Red Sox
NCAA: OU
International Soccer: Brazil

I was never really interested in baseball, but I started getting caught up in the Red Sox two-three years ago, mainly because of how passionate Bill Simmons is about them. It felt awesome to me that they won last year, but I feel kinda dirty about it at the same time. Put a gun to my head, and they're my MLB team. But you can call me bandwagon if you want.

I've been fans of the Mavs and Cowboys for as long as I can remember. My dad used to take me to Mavs games during the awful 9 and 11 win seasons, but I remember them winning more than losing when I went. This is through the rose-colored lens of childhood, but I'm 90% positive that as bad as they were, they still had a winning record in games I attended.

This is unfair to those of us who didn't grow up in just one place I think. For instance, being born in Maine, I've rooted for the Red Sox/Pats/Celtics/Bruins for a while, and I was stoked when the Sox won, but you won't ever see me grandstanding like I can compete with sublime or daryn or JT, etc. Likewise, I've been over the UK connection enough that if no one should be pointing fingers at me if I brag on them. I'm going all ATL for this, but understand that I don't like it. Not one bit.

NFL: Falcons
MLB: Braves
NBA: sigh...Hawks
NHL: Thrashers
college football: Georgia Tech

You didn't think this through very well. I want to call you a complete moron but i won't. I was born in Idaho which has no pro teams, does this mean i can't be a fan? Sure the tv stations consider the Jazz, the Rockies and the Avalance, and the Seahawks our "local" teams, but i am not fans of all those teams. My dad lived in Baltimore most of his life and attended many Orioles games, so when i grew up we watched the O's and i became a true fan. I am, however, a fan of temas in some sports where I know im not a true fan, such as the Steelers. I never really had an NFL team, i just liked the steelers when i was young and i still like them.

NFL: Steelers (psuedo fan) - I'll labe them just to make blank happy.

I wish I had an old Sox hat that I could wear to show that I've been a fan through their terrible years. The thing is, I bought one while on a cruise at the Dominican Republic this summer. When we had left they were about 10 games behind the Yankees and out of Wild Card. When we came back they were in the middle of their run to the playoffs. So now my hat is new and I look like a bandwagonner when i wear it.

Oh, and I was more of a Celtics fan back when they were coached by M.L. Carr. If THAT doesn't spell devotion...

This is so wrong. Here's an example; I'm from Chicago, where there are a surprising number of Packer fans. One of the primary reasons is that our fair city formerly had two football teams; the Bears and the present-day Cardinals. Many Cardinal fans (and now their kids) swore of Chicago football the day their team moved (1959). Therefore, for this reason, it's really not fair to criticize people in Chicago who support other football teams. Many of them did support Chicago football; it left, and they moved on. They're not allowed to be "real fans"?

Valid reasons can be made for supporting hockey teams other than the Chicago Blackhawks, too; here we have a case of the worst owner in sports treating his home fans like garbage for decades. Why shouldn't I be a Red Wings fan since all of my favorite Blackhawk players (or their sons) now play for the Wings?

Thanks for all the responses so far. I have to say I'm surprised by a couple things. Not as much Boston and Seattle support as I expected, considering the amount of love they get in OOT on a regular basis. Maybe the few fans they have here are just more vocal than most? NBA=Cavs until Lenny Wilkins left. Then I moved and don't give a crap.
NHL=What is this NHL? and what does it do? I lived in Chicago for two years as a kid and had a Blackhawks hat. But I couldn't tell you a single player on the team. I guess the Predators since I am from Nashville. but, honestly, i don't care.

Oh come on. I've been on my good behavior lately. I haven't been insensitive to anyone or anything's plight in days.
