we're about ready to roll folks. STRIKE A POSE FOR THE CINEMATOGRAPHERS! DISINTERESTED YET PENSIVE, PEOPLE! WE WANT TO MAKE SURE TO DRIVE THIS USELESS AND UNINSIGHTFUL "SUBTLE" POINT UP THEIR ASSES OUT THE TOP OF THEIR HEADS AND THEN BEAT ITS CORPSE! POSE! DID WE LEARN NOTHING FROM GHOST WORLD?!

Thank you. I don't care about arguing the merits of the theme, etc, but when you throw it in the audiences' face, it make me want to throw up.

Im not 100% sure what this means, but I think I agree with you.

Standing on top of crap in the rain, looking off into space.

strangely enough, saw it for the first time last night. _hated it_. i've never seen a movie that took itself so seriously say so little. it's bizarre how drastically the main characters change from cheerful ironic people to depressed heartfelt people in the course of a couple days. yawn me a fugging river.

Call me a pedophile, but I'm sorry, Portman, as attractive as she is now, was never as hot as she was in Leon.

this movie reminds me a lot of napoleon dynamite. i think that when young people watch these movies they believe that for some reason they SHOULD like them. they see a movie that is somewhat different from the rest of the crap out there and appeals to them in some way or another (maybe they think the movie helps to identify them) and then they fall in love with it.

Great movie.

Really unique, real dialog and solid acting. Gives the Baby Boomers and Gen X'ers a look into our generation. Best soundtrack ever. Ending wasn't that great. The whole abyss symbolism was over-played trying to make something artistic out of what was just a simple and solid movie.

the ending was kinda awful.

the movie itself was a bit better than okay but that's about it. didn't exactly blow me away.
I thought the acting was not very good at times. The whole relationship with the Dad only kind of made sense.

I liked Ghost World a TON though (referred to earlier in the thread and kinda-sorta similar i suppose).

Here's what keeps bothering me so much: A movie like Igby Goes Down is similar to Garden State thematically, but contains much better writing and acting. It understands subtlety. It doesn't feel the need to throw the ideas in your face, they're just there.

Yet, I always hear "OhmyGawd, you will love Garden State!" while a far superior movie (imho of course) gets 1/10th of the attention.

Agreed, Igby goes down was much better than Garden State. It wasn't however marketed as well.

I liked igby goes down way more than garden state. Also liked ghost world more than garden state.

"This is America dude. Learn the rules."

"We greeks invented democracy!"

"Also invented homos."

I really liked it. Natalie's character is awesome as hell. Except for the seizures, she could do without those.

The ending was kinda weak, but whatever.

Eh, personally I like slightly bleak movies featuring insanely beautiful girls. Like I said, her character was awesome as hell. The movie was funny. The ending sucked, but whatever. Can't win 'em all.

It was alright. Some of the music was great.

I agree with astro's assessment. I can only think that the people who really love the movie don't even notice the things that make it worse than it could have been.

I think it speaks to a different generation than me. Maybe people who are about 5-9 years younger?

I still get the creeps over people getting hot over Portman. She still looks like such a little kid to me. She makes the Olsen twins look like old maids in comparison.
