View Full Version : How did you do on the SAT?

I got a 1310 last fall on my first try. 710 on math and 600 for verbal. I'm kind of upset about how they changed it because some of my strengths were taken away.

I have no idea what the SATs are like now that they've changed them. I took them 2 years ago and got 1480, 760 Math, 720 verbal.

tbach24

They took out comparative and added essays. Comparative is what kept me afloat on the verbal. I think there's more pre-calc stuff on the math. Not sure though. Also, there's not much difference between algebra 2 and pre-calc.

Yeah that's brutal. Friend of my bro got rejected by Princeton with all A's in all his classes. He had taken all APs or better since Junior year and got a 1600 first try and 800 on all SAT 2's. He was a tri-varsity athlete Junior and Senior year and did a lot of community service and extracuriculars. I'm not sure what to make of it besides the fact that he was probably was a retard on the tour (he is wicked arrogant).

Yeah, it's pretty easy to boost your score 100+ points (even if you only have 180 points to go) by reading a couple of strategy books. And by "pretty easy" I mean "really, really easy."

As others have said, the SAT is not a good measure of intelligence. It's a fair measure of what you learn in the first couple years of high school; that's not really that much. It doesn't even have any calculus on it. If you're smart but don't test well, you can be pretty boned.

yup...2 things though:

1) im not a fan of linking "smart" to SATs....i know guys adn gals who scored under 1200 that are extremely smart.

2) those 2p2ers who didn't do well on these tests are less likely to answer the question (even though they are anonymous)...it has been proven that even on telephone or random anonymous surveys, people lie to inflate their view of THEMSELVES and are afraid of what the pollster/polltaker would think of them.

Absolutely people lie. Just look at the number of people who toss in "additional" information (like me)- how the didn't get any sleep, car accident before hand or just the qualifier "no preparation" shows just how much we want to be valued for our intelligence. And the sat's (at least the ones i took) aren't even a good measure of it.

When I took the SAT, I had been awake for an entire week, slashing sugar cane for 5 cents an hour by day and participating in medical experiments where I was injected with antifreeze by night.

I scored a 3000, which I was a little disappointed by (turns out I missed one of the extra extra credit questions on the back. Darn antifreeze!). I was accepted to many top universities, including Harvard, Yale, MIT, Oxford, Cambridge, and the Dagestan Pedagogical Institute. Additionally, I was offered a position as a God on Mount Olympus.

All that was a little too intimidating though, so I enrolled part time at a local vocational college. After all, those carburetors won't fix themselves.

SAT scores do tell you something, but the only thing they are really worth is helping you get into school. The better question is what did you do with your SAT score.

I had several friends in high school who did really well in school and tore up the SAT but then went to a local school b/c it was cheaper and their parents didn't want them to leave home. I'm sure they all did really well there, but they essentially were going to the same school that people with much lower scores in all categories got in to. Again the top scores may have been at the top at the local school, but you never know, they could have been top at a much better school. They sold themselves short in my book and wasted a valuable opportunity.

"I think it's one of the best ones we have."

The Sats are one of the worst sanctioned measures of intelligence out there- i hope the new ones have fixed some of the problems. Your first clue should be when you show up to the review sessions and the first thing they teach you is how to "take the test"- ie simple tricks that will improve your score witch don't depend on your actual knowledge or problem solving capability. Your second clue should be when you realize the test is multiple choice. Most of the SATs comes down to memorization which is not intelligence, they had very little in the way of problem solving, and god help you if you grew up using a slightly different dialect than what the framers of the test use. Its not even a good test of knowledge- nothing on natural or social sciences- just math, and verbal.

Percentile of high school seniors scoring 750 or above = 99, or less than 1 in 100.

Percentage on this board claiming they scored 750 or above = 44, almost 1 in 2.

Sorry, not buying it, not even with the self selected sample.

I believe it.

First the sample is limited to people who have access to the internet. Many still don't, and I'm guessing average SAT scores are higher among those who do, because yada yada yada ...

Then the sample is limited to people who've taken up poker in their spare time. So they're probably not total airheads.

Then it's limited to the small subset of poker players who post on 2+2. Perhaps smarter or at least more studious than the average poker player.

Finally, poker players aren't known for their modesty. So the people in your sample are more likely to brag about their strengths and less likely to parade their weaknesses.

I'd have been surprised if the results were anything other than what they are.

I personally only scored 670M/650V, but went to engineering school anyway, and I'm fairly sure I was in the bottom quartile or maybe even the bottom decile. There are, ostensibly, a lot of math types here, so I guess I'm just not that surprised that the distribution on the forums is highly skewed towards the high end on the math scores.

Whatever...

This is one thing I will definetly agree with.

Im sure a ton of you out there who did weaker are simply not responding to the poll, of course inflating the numbers.

I still dont believe the numbers though. I think they would be accurate for Students at Cal Tech and MIT, and thats about it. Not OOT on 2+2. Just my opinion.

At just about any school in America, there is no way you were in the bottom quartile or decile. The schools that you would have been, wouldnt have accepted you with those scores anyways.

Meh, there are a bunch of colleges whose students have 1300+ median SATs. Not that many but I'm guessing about 15-20?

I think you're overestimating the amount of intelligence necessary to score 1300+.

800m, 760v junior year
1350 in 8th grade
1170 in 7th

the SAT I is really not a difficult exam. for instance, as hs exams go, the amc/aime/usamo/imo sequence is a much better test of mathematical ability than the math portion of the sat 1 or the sat2 in math.

These are all pre-essay test.
6th grade 1190 (640 M, 550 V)
9th grade 1440 (800 M, 640 V)
11th grade 1560 (800 M, 760 V)
Bonus nerd pts - perfect 240 on PSAT.

I ruled standardized tests, which was the only thing that got me through college into med school since I was so lazy.

70% of us claiming they got atleast 1300.

Claims like this are dissapointing, and make it hard to believe posts in general on this board, since there is no way that number is accurate.

i done pretty good and stuff in high skewl and wutever but no one wanted my sorry ass.

no for real i got like top 99% everything, valedictorian, national merit scholar, 4 varsity athlete, yadda yadda, and everywhere (yale, harvard, pricneton, stanford, brown) but mit, where my mom and brther went, accepted me. and mit was terrible, i left that [censored] after a year. according to tbach's calculations i must have been a real douche on the tours/interviews (makes sense, i can def. be arrogant at times)

but now i'm fnie and dandy i transferred schools, am happy, still going to law school somehow if i ever graduate and playing poker all thefrikkin time. so who cares what those schools thought of me! (ha like i held a grudge, i wound up transferring to one of em)

p.s. my lsat score kicked butt. hopefully it makes up for all the classes i will fail this semester from too many trips to foxwoods.

Yeah I took it in 6th grade and I dont think I did that good(Around Mid 900's I think)...I dont remeber what I got exactly and couldn't find the results a couple years ago when I looked.

The SAT's I got a 1240 with a 680 M and 560 V (damn I suck at verbal) So of course I go to college for a communications degree. Makes sense
