Uggg... why is it so often when you hit your set, it has to be on a flop like this? This was just stupid of me. What amazes me is (1) the villains preflop call (2) that he didn't seem to concerned about AK. Aaargh... I feel like
an idiot.

Results in white below:
BB has Kc 9c (straight, king high).
Hero has Qd Qc (three of a kind, queens).
Button has (three of a kind, queens).
Outcome: BB wins $61.16.

i think you played it fine. i think your opponent has a draw + pair, just a draw, and underset, two pair, or is just plain stupid enough of the time for you to make that call. and if you ARE behind, you've got a guaranteed 7 outs on the turn and 11 outs on the river.

Kicking yourself is being results-oriented. A set isn't that far behind a straight or flush on the flop, since you fill up about 35% of the time. How would your opponent play a lower set, which has only one out against you?

I had exactly the same flop a couple of days ago, I had QQ and the flop was QJT with the queen and ten of the same suit. This is what happened:

Hero is UTG+1 with QQ and has the table covered.
Villain 1 has 34 BB.
Villain 2 has 103 BB.

1 fold. Hero raises to 4 BB. 1 fold. Villain 1 calls. 1 fold. Villain 2 calls. Everyone else folds.

Flop 13.5 BB Q/images/graemlins/spade.gif J/images/graemlins/heart.gif T/images/graemlins/spade.gif (3 players):
Hero bets 10 BB, Villain 1 raises to 30 BB(all-in), Villain 2 calls 30 BB, Hero reraises to 100 BB, Villain 2 calls 69 BB (all-in).

Turn: K/images/graemlins/spade.gif

River: 4/images/graemlins/diamond.gif

Villain 1 had JTo, bottom 2.
Villain 2 had JJ, middle set.

Other than not raising enough preflop this looks generally sound to me. Should have been at least $1.50 to go before the flop, probably $2.00.

I agree. Technically, $1.50 is a good way to go, but on a purely psychological level, $2 will thin the field the best at 25NL. Don't ask me why. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

"Weak." I find this curious. I vary my raises depending on what table it is, what position I'm at and how many limpers there are.

My standard opening raise is anywhere from 4-8bb. I usually go for 6bb if there's 4 or more limpers. Since there had been only 1 or 2 limpers, I raised my standard.

Had there been a few more limpers, I would have raised higher. I thought the idea was to raise consistantly so as not to reveal the strength of your hand? (With that being said... there are quite a few players who raise according to their hand strength... minraise means pp, 3bb means nice ace, 8bb means kings or aces.... I don't want to be that readable.)

I always, always, raise at least 4xBB + (1xBB for each limper). I'll often "round up" in cases like this, like to $2 here - I don't like raising $1.50 b/c it's kind of a strange number, also I'd rather everyone else NOT know that I'm giving this a lot of thought. If I'm on the button and I'm playing $1/$2 and there are three limpers and I don't want to raise it to $14, that's always a good sign I shouldn't be raising.

It should also be said that this guy probably liked his K9 regardless, so I doubt the extra scratch saves you. But I didn't have anything else remotely constructive to add /images/graemlins/smile.gif.

I agree that your raises should not reveal your hand strength and if I had 99 and chose to raise here, I would make the same size raise as I'd make w/ AA.

By raising to only 4 bb after limpers, you are losing value on your hands and improving your opponents' implied odds. You want to play a bigger pot w/ strong relative position.

In NL, I prefer to raise 5 Big Blinds + 1 Big Blind/limper. So in this case, your raise would be $1.75.
