Proper chili

Noshing on a mediocre bowl of local NYC chili. I've had much better and I doubt I've ever had what a connoisseur considers real chili.

Anyway. This has beans.

fresh on top is ok, in the chili I'm not a fan...but that would be the lone exception. Tomatoes in it ruin it for me.

Hormell's chili w/ beans is my favorite store bought chili. The best chili I've had has been homemade but I don't know how to make it well.

Any good Texan chili purist knows it shouldn't have beans. With that said, I prefer mine with beans and that's how I make it. I make it from scratch with my own recipe. It has beer in it. It has both hamburger and stew meat. It has fresh tomatoes. Nothing comes from a can. There is no chili mix from a box. And there sure as hell isn't any turkey in it. Yet as a good Texan I still feel some shame every time I add the beans.

I've eaten all kinds of chili (born in texas) and they say real chili has no beans in it.

A friend of mine makes Chicken Chili. I had never tried it before this year. I still prefer the beef, but it was a nice change.
