Louisville beats Illinois.

Louisville beats UNC in the championship game.

If anyone beats the Illini, I think it's Louisville or UNC. Pitino is the best coach they will ever face, and if anyone can get an outmatched team to compete, it's him. UNC has all the pieces to beat Illinois, but Roy is going to have to prove he can handle it, and keep his teams' heads in the game.

Clark - how do you feel after watching Illinois suffer against a team with legitimate athletic big men? Not trying to talk trash, just asking if you think Illinois is as much of a shoe-in as you did in your post where you ranked the team

I think UNC is the favorite right now because, assuming UNC and Illinois make the finals, the Illini have no real answer for May down low. After watching those Illini show so much heart it's tough to pick anyone over them, but I don't know, UNC looks so athletic right now.

At this point it's damn hard to say the Big Ten is not at least in the discussion for the best conference in the country this year. Wisky is clearly the worst of the 3 top BT teams and they are giving UNC all they can handle while MSU drew off from Duke and Illinois crushed Wake earlier in the year.

zaxx19
03-27-2005, 04:30 PM
Wow the B10 has already made their statement in this tourney...

I fully expect Wisky to loose this game but jeezus they were argueably the 4th best team in the B10 at the end of the yr(depends how yu saw Ohio St.) and they go in at half even with the "monster" UNC...

The B10 might not of been the strongest conference in the nation this yr but it seems as though many vastly underatted the squads in it.

Phoenix1010
03-27-2005, 04:30 PM
Have to respect the discipline of the Badgers. They seemed lost early, but the defense really clamped down toward the end there. Wilkinson was really making some heads up plays. Hanson was the only thing keeping us in the game early.

DangerGoodson
03-27-2005, 04:32 PM

Agreed: they are in the discussion. Like you, I just dont see the argument for Big East. Thus far, Big Ten has been the best in this tournament. But, ACC did crush Big Ten headsup in the ACC-Big Ten challenge (which, I'll admit, was a while ago).

Good game. It's a shame Devin Harris is wearing a mavericks jeresy instead of a badger one, we would be in the final four.

I can't see how anyone can argue that the big ten isn't the best conference in the nation this year. 3 teams in the Eilte 8, did any other conference get more than one? How did the 3rd best team in the ACC (wake) do against the best team in the big ten (Illinois) this year? blowout loss. How did the third best team (wisconsin) in the big ten do against the best team in the ACC (UNC)? tough fought loss.

There is no argument. Big Ten > ACC or any other conference.

Well, please allow me to retort.

If your basis for saying this is performance in the tournament, then yes, you can say that "the Big Ten > ACC in the tournament"; I would agree with you. However, you cannot expand the tournament to "this year" (this season), and that's what you're trying to do.

If you need justification for why ACC > Big Ten for "this year", please have a look at the results of the Big Ten-ACC Challenge, as well as the AP or USA Today Top 25 Rankings. Aside from Illinois' dominate presence at the top, the pickings are very slim for the Big Ten. The ACC has three teams in the Top 5 (UNC: 2, Dook: 3, Wake: 5). To get three Big Ten teams, you have to go Top 20 (Illinois: 1, Michigan St.: 15, Wisconsin: 20).

Hell, Sagarin has Big Ten picked fifth (http://www.usatoday.com/sports/sagarin/bkc0405.htm) behind ACC, Big East, Big 12, and SEC!

Your move.

Aside from Illinois dominate presence at the top, the pickings are very slim.

Your move.

If the regular season mattered so much, why does the ncca have a 64 team tourney?

What? Is that the best you can do?? If the tournament is all that matters, why even have the regular season?

Please explain how it is that all of the 30+ games played by each team in regular season somehow is worth infinitely less than a tourney consisting of 6 games or fewer for each team?

Your sample size is too small; mine is better. Again, I definitely agree that the Big Ten has outperformed all else in the tournament - there simply is no argument (until UNC wipes the floor with all of them /images/graemlins/wink.gif). But, you're trying to take the results of a very few games, contrast them to the much larger population of regular season games that display medoicre Big Ten performance, and say the former is a better measure than the latter for "this year". That's absurd.

How is a season not defined by what you do in the tournament?
The TOURNAMENT IS THE SEASON!

Umm, no. The season, which includes both regular season and post-season games, is the "season". The season is defined by what you do throughout. I refuse to believe you are this dense.

But should I expect anything rational from a supporter of the conference that cannot count the number of teams in it correctly?

End of thread.

If UNC would have lost to Oakland in the 1st round do you consider their "season" a sucess? No. Once again the sucess of a season is defined by what you do in the tournament. I think you took the short-bus to school.

And I think you're a moron with little in the way of reading comprehension skills. As I've said, I'm not saying the tourney doesn't mean anything - I think the tournament is a part of the whole, not the entire season. You somehow believe the 30+ games of the regular season is like the pre-season or something.

You're throwing a team's expectations and goals into the mix when making your statement; there are very MANY teams that will call their season a "success" that did not do well in this tournament. Heck, many teams that didnt even make the tournament will consider their season a success. By your definition, there are only 65 teams that even HAD a season.

Let me guess: you are one of those that thinks the Buffalo Bills were a failure since they never won the Super Bowl, right?

I shouldn't try to argue with a wall. Please try to think harder.

Clark - how do you feel after watching Illinois suffer against a team with legitimate athletic big men? Not trying to talk trash, just asking if you think Illinois is as much of a shoe-in as you did in your post where you ranked the team
