Dont they have that in casinos already? It's called 3 Card Poker I think.

Here's a simple game I came up with when drunk:

everyone gets 5 cards down, one betting round, only one unit can be bet.

there are no antes or blinds

but if you bet and no one calls, you can declare "call the fold", and if your hand is worse than everyone elses you win one unit from everyone else

recomended: units represent a drink of one shot

I agree. NO action, excitement, or skill with just one betting round; and just two (or three) cards.

i disagree
i think it would be 100% skill
also, i was thinking about having 2 betting rounds, but probably not

Look up 3 card brag. Slightly different because the rules on raising/calling are not the same as regular poker.

Sounds like a game we used to play in college. We called it "two card challenge." It was a pot burn game though.

Why not give everyone one card down with a betting round, then one up card for the board (followed by a betting round). That would be more interesting and I think bluffing would actually be possible here.

Imagine what the action would look like when a 5 comes up for the board. Doubtful anyone but the button or blinds would consider playing a 5 (depending on the action). Since it looks pretty harmless there is ample opportunity for deception.

Comments?

The reason I say NO skill is that unlike most other poker games is that the value of hands does NOT change. Whoever starts with the best hand wins. Therefore, everyone would play extremely tight and the game would be 100% mathematical. For example, in early position you might as well only play aces and kings, in middle position maybe you could loosen up a bit and play queens and jacks also, then in late position you can maybe play tens, nines, and eights. Ace-king (suited or unsuited) would have NO value since even a pair of twos beats it and therefore, you might as well just fold ace-king from every position, except if you were maybe on a blind steel from late position.

whoever is dealt the best hand doesnt necessarily win, especially in your scenario where a person would fold a hand like AK from every position.
and with antes and blinds, do you really see somebody folding big non pair hands ?
somehow i think theres more skill involved than you give credit, but maybe im crazy

It won't work because it is boring. An expert can have a good edge, but it is too boring to get enough dead money to play

Ok, I will admit that my example was a little exaggerated but thats because I was trying to prove a point. All I am saying is that the real skill games have more betting rounds and hands change value (in many cases tremendously) between the begginning and end. Even realize how Sklansky is always saying that good preflop hold'em strategy will NOT win money in the long run, it is the play on the flop, turn, and river that's important. If this new texas hold'em without a flop game was played there would be a pretty mathematical and tight strategy that most players would play and everyone would break about even because nobody would really have an edge. Not to mention there would probably be NO fish in this game because it would NOT take bad players very long to figure out they were terrible (because the short term luck factor (aka standard deviation) would be extremely small.

Oh yeah, and I also doubt that you're the first person to think of this game so there has to be some reason it's NOT already out being played in the casinos? Oh yeah, that's probably because it would NOT be an exciting, action packed, yet skillful game that would attract all types of gamblers (fish, pros, the recreational gambler, etc...).

How about Holdem with a third card but you can only play two of them and you have to throw the other out before the flop. I think that would be a great game.

You get dealt A /images/graemlins/heart.gif J /images/graemlins/heart.gif J /images/graemlins/club.gif

Do you play the A /images/graemlins/heart.gif J /images/graemlins/heart.gif or JJ?
