Watching the AZ press conference on ESPN, the final play was for Adams to get the ball to Frye down low or make a move to the basket. Salim was not suppose to get the ball at all!!

DeathDonkey
03-26-2005, 11:03 PM
They went iso to Adams because he was just killing his defender all game. But he's not that type of player for a last shot, because he has to be able to drive and not get doubled. It looked like they were trying to force a double team but Adams couldn't break down his man.

It was a bad play call to put the ball in Adams' hands but the reason behind it made some sense. I really can't believe they didn't let Salim have it. I know he had a bad shooting day so far but its his game to win or lose. They wouldn't have even been there if it wasn't for him.

Everyone will talk about the last shot but they blew this game in the final 4 minutes of regulation. Shakur should be shot for the way he choked today.

Illinois made a great comeback and has heart and all that crap, but they got lucky as hell too. I haven't seen them play but how the heck do they beat anyone? They have no offense other than shooting random 3s and they can't rebound for [censored]. I was really not impressed.

Kudos to Illinois for for taking what they where given, however, 12-18 Oakland University would have beaten UNC with same freedom to aggressively foul.

The officiating was equitable for a bout 5 minutes in the 2nd half, and during that time Arizona took a 15 point lead. And yes they played much to passively for the next 3 minutes, and Adams held the ball too long on the final play, but that would not have been an issue without the game long mauling that took place.

A couple of specific examples, 1) Arizona working the ball into Frye, the Ill player grabs Frye's jersey, holds him in place, pushes around him and shoves him 2 feet out of the way, pass goes over both players heads to where Frye would've been and continues out of bounds. Good job to Ill for scouting and knowing what was coming, and good job for making that play, but bad job to the officials for not calling the foul. 2) Less than a minute left, AZ by 7, left and Shakur with the ball, Ill trying to foul (and succeeding). Ill player commits foul and knocks ball loose, pauses waiting for the whistle. When there is no whistle he chases the ball down and takes it in for the easy lay up. Again good job to Ill for taking advantage of the situation, and bad job to the officails for looking the other way.

These are just two examples of the hacking, and general mauling that the officials ignored for all but about 5 minutes of the game.

Congratulations and good luck (they're going to need it) to Illinois, but the best team did not win.

While I've seen all the whining about the officiating from the AZ fans, I disagree.

However, let's say you are right and the officiating was bad. AWESEOME. Finally some payback for the fcuking we got 4 years ago when the officiating was totally the other way and 5 of our 8 best players fouled out while not one single Arizona player fouled out and we still almost won. If there's one team that I could give a rats'ass if the officiating helped us against, it's Arizona.

That all said, I really think you are wrong. They also had shown lots of iso shots where Salim was grabbing the jersey of Deron trying to slow him down while he was running through pics. Lots of fouls against Arizona players went uncalled down low. The refs let the kids play.

Team fouls:
AZ = 10
IL = 18

Missed calls went both ways.... Dee was sodomized in the second half on more then one occasions. Radenovic's 3 was clearly a 2... games should have been over in regulation. The officating was loose the whole game and both ways. Get over it.

The officiating was fine I thought. I mean it was terrible going by the rule book but at least they let them play and weren't too one sided either way. Plus the unlike the UNC/Villanova game the officials didn't decide the game and let the players make plays down the stretch which is nice for once.

I guess we'll have to disagree on that, I remember that game well, and frankly the Illinois players were a bunch of thugs. It seemed to me that they were badly overmatched and that they had no other option to stay in the game than to foul and foul hard. Thats why so many of them fouled out and it's why they stayed close. Basketball is physically rough game, but does not need to be (and shouldn't be allowed to be) taken to that level. That Illinois team had a well earned reputation, on a national level, for being overly physical.

Fortunately this Illinois team is not a bunch thugs, They are a very good team (obviously). There will always be alot of uncalled fouls each way, in this game I believe that any unbiased viewer (which neither of us claim to be), would agree that Arizona got beaten on and mauled inside to the point of not being able to play a game resembling basketball.

They also had shown lots of iso shots where Salim was grabbing the jersey of Deron trying to slow him down while he was running through pics.

I didn't see this, not to say that it didn't happen. I just didn't see it (could have to due with my bias). Illinois did a phenominal job of screening to create open looks, in fact, that was the best part of their game.

And as far as the refs "letting the kids play", yes they did. I feel they let it go too far. Calling ticky tack fouls is a bad thing, let them play.....But game altering hacks, shoves and near tackles shouldn't be allowed, and that is what the officials allowed the Illini to get away with for all but about 5 minutes of the game.

Home court advantage should have been enough for a great one loss team to soundly beat a lowly #3 seed. They shouldn't have needed the co-operation of the refs also.

This is what happens when one team fouls more frequently than the other.

Radenovic's 3 was clearly a 2

I agree, but pointing to one incident to say the game should have been over in regulation makes no sense. We could always point to the IL steal with about a minute remaining. The one that your player hesitated to chase down. It seemed to me he was waiting for the whistle, when it didn't blow he chased down the ball and made the layup, the steal and basket on the inbound cut our lead to 3. The whistle blows, and Shakur goes to line and lead is 8 or 9, and this game has a different outcome in regulation also.

The officating was loose the whole game and both ways.

Arizona got hacked and mauled under and around the basket much more than should be allowed.

Dee was sodomized in the second half on more then one occasions.

Is that why he was smiling so much? /images/graemlins/grin.gif

If the play is foul or some other violation that alters the outcome of the game it needs to be called. If it is not called the game is not being contested under the rules set forth and ceases to be the same game.

If someone has two pair and a loaded pistol and takes a pot from someone with a full house, we can choose to "let them play", but they are no longer playing poker.
