Besides with my other friends who play online, I've started to not talk about poker whatsoever. I feel like I'm bragging and being overly obnoxious when I tell people I play poker online for money. Do you tell people?

i feel the same as you. i'm a student and pay my rent tuition, living exp. etc through poker.

i don't talk to many people about it if i'm not close to them because i feel the same way about my salary(if i had one :P)-its private info.

with the poker explosion...it feels strange talking to people who seem to think they know the game inside out when all they know are the players they see on the travel channel.

My immediate family and close friends know that I play online on a regular basis. They don't know my bankroll or limits, but they do know that I play for real money and do quite well. I have nothing to hide.

I never told anyone anything about my play. My mom probably talks about it more than I do, and even she doesn't really know all of it. Whenever someone asks me what I do for money, I just find some way around it.

However, now pretty much everyone knows. I got bored, and decided to write about some of my challenges and goals in my blog, so now pretty much everyone knows. I still haven't had a conversation about it with anyone, and I have no idea how the first one will go, but I guess we'll see soon.

lol this has got to be stupid response..but I usually don't talk about it since I'm mainly trying to write for a living both TV/Film. But I've had several girls who when they found out about it...A:) they don't believe I make any money, and B:) they want to see me play.
I've actually had a girl who told me later that she wasn't planning on sleeping with me, but she got really turned on when I told her what to do in a party room NL.-she(technically me) won like $100 off of some dumbass who called all-in with two pair on a board with 4 clubs...he didnt have a club.
So I'de personally like to thank Party Poker and that fish for helping me get some.
And she was hot-i had figured I didn't have a chance...

You've got it all wrong. I just tell chicks I am a professional poker player, flash them a few grand in c-notes rolled up and they jump on my cock.

None of this "extra money" and "online" crap. Details won't get you laid here.

Due to recurrent threats of strangulation I've stopped responding to inquiries about my hourly wage from non-playing friends.

If people I don't really know ask what I do for a living I claim to be a trust-fund baby or that I invest in short term papers. Both are strictly speaking true, my father did make a fund with a whopping $20k to be released when I was 18... I guess everyone can figure out the investment allegory.

Getting laid should still be fairly easy, go wild with the ostentatious display.

I take exactly the same route as you; at first I used to love to talk shop in front of my friends -- but stopped abruptly when i realized they were starting to think of my as some trust-fund baby whose parents must have bankrolled him, and who has nothing better to do than throw money around in online 15/30 games.

in fact, i talk a lot about just that type of pschology in my blog -- www.zbasic.com/pokerblog.html (http://www.zbasic.com/pokerblog.html) -- it really doesn't matter if I try to explain that I built my bankroll up MYSELF from just a few hundred dollars starting at 2/4 last year. They don't understand -- they just see it as a lot of money being thrown around, and figure you had it all handed to you on a silver platter. The same psychological inability to understand how to play poker properly themselves prevents them from understanding what a grind it is/can be to eek out profits.

[/ QUOTE ]

I'm not embarassed to gamble... especially since I don't consider poker gambling. I know if I play my game I'll win $$$ in the long run.

People still don't understand that. They see poker as a game of luck and see people who play poker no different than any other gambling.

People who aren't into the poker world just don't understand.

yes i tell ppl.
most people are quite interested in finding out more, things like is it rigged? what's the action like, etc.

I don't really like to talk about it general. I really hate it when people find out about it because the first thing they usually ask is how much do you make ? So I usually just make up some strange figure.

The whole trust fund angle seems to work quite well also.

As I remember, yr location used to be "making sweet love to SSHE" or something liek that. How do you feel about Miller et al's position on poker being gambling, and that not realizing this leads to mistakes? Just seriously wondering -- not trying to flame you.

When people ask how much, I always drop my head a little and say, "a little bit" or something to that effect.

Can't believe everything you read /images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I hate to go into a lengthy post so I'll give the watered down version. I both agree and disagree with him. Poker is gambling... there's no way around it. You are betting on an uncertain outcome and that is the definition of gambling.

I think a good poker player though by the way he/she plays puts the odds in their favor. When the odds are in your favor and you'll win money in the long run, then you're not really taking a risk hoping for a gain. There is no hope involved.

A good poker player is just like a casino. A casino is gambling but casinos make money because everything is in their advantage. In the long run, they make money.

I don't go out of my way to tell people, but I don't deny it either. The thing I hate the most is, you tell someone that you play online and they ask how you do. For instance, this week someone asked me if my wife minded me playing and I said "Not since I scheduled that cruise next month out of the poker money." Their immediate response, since you failed to give them the "I lose my ass monthly" answer they wanted is "gee, wish I had time to do stuff like that. But I spend time with my family, work etc I'm way to busy." I just want to kick them in their pompous asses. Yea, I'm sure they are way to busy spending time with their kids watching TV that they can't afford an hour a day for online time. /images/graemlins/mad.gif

IggyWH

That's exactly it. When you tell someone who doesn't know, they expect to hear that you lose money. When you tell them you don't, then they think it's something that's easy and you're just lucky. It's a lose/lose situation with someone who doesn't know the online poker world.

I also get a lot of "When am I going to see you on ESPN?" People don't understand it's not 5 million or bust.

I used to, then I started making a meaningful amount.

I don't anymore, I tell them I do IT stuff (which I do on the side).

I tell my friends that I play poker online for cash. My favorite is my one moronic friend who plays pennies with his buddies and believes that real poker is all about reading "tells" like the way this guy stacks his chips blah blah blah... It was also really funny when he told me you need no more than "20 bills" to successfully play 2-4.

I imagine it would be really boring for someone who doesnt know alot about poker to watch someone else play online. Maybe you can impress her by playin like 16 tables, but if u only play like 4 tables, it'll probly be real boring for her to watch.

I don't TELL people i play cards. It typically sparks the same anxious discussions and questions. However, if someone happens to ask me (being that most my friends know my primary source of income) i will tell them i do in fact play.

Just don't like talking about it for some reason, who knows why.
