I often hear people say that the correct way to play AK in NL holdem is to raise 4x BB, then check/fold if you miss the flop.

This seems idiotic to me, since I'm only going to hit the flop about 1/3 of the time. Why should I raise to 4x the BB, giving whoever calls me 2:1 odds?

I'm not saying check-folding is right or wrong, but your opponent doesn't know you have AK, he doesn't really have 2-1 odds, he has to bet you out of the pot first. If he bets every flop then you have implied odds when you hit with your AK and make money in the long run.

I haven't been playing NL for a few months, but from what I remember, you are leaving HUGE amounts of money on the table if you are check/folding the flops when you don't hit, especially when there are only a few others to the flop to you. I would generally be betting at any non draw-heavy board with AK if I don't hit.
