View Full Version : The problem with 'sup bro'

DrPublo

The problem with the 'sup bro?' phrase is that there's no clear way to tell if the response is a 2+2 acknowledgement or just someone responding to an urban greeting.

Example:

Tonight I identified someone at one of my tables who I was pretty sure is a poster. We had been sitting together for awhile so I didn't just want to bust out the line. So I tried to ease into it:

Me: Hey xxxxxxxxxx, didn't I see you last night?
Him: Don't know where....
Me: Here, on the tables, playing poker.
Me: Sup bro?
Him: Super
Him: Yep
[Note that the timing of the conversation here was kind of off, so it's unclear which line is a response to what]
....
More random conversation about are you up, down, etc.

So it's clear that 'sup bro?' has too many other responses to be a good 2+2 greeting.

Just my .02c

The Doc

PS This is also the only time I've actively identified a suspected 2+2er at a table, so I'm kind of disheartened that the line was inconclusive.

the correct response is something like "all county '95" or "when sup bro goes all-in you know it"

Can't we just stick with brown trout? So much more conclusive and it means nothing to others

Saying "Sup bro" right off the bat, you can usually tell if they are a trouter or not.

Right, but the problem is by this time we had been sitting together for well over an hour. A sup bro would be out of place, no?

No conversation is necessary. Their stats will usually let you know if they're a poster. But if wanna chat with them, something like "Don't you post in zoo?" is pretty straightfoward and meaningless /images/graemlins/wink.gif

Just out of curiosity....

How many here would admit it, if asked at the table?

I've only had it come up once, so far - two others at my table were already discussing 2+2 (by name, no codewords!), commented then commented to me "you look like a TAG, you post at 2+2 too?" I mumbled something like "heard of it, been there a few times to look around" rather than admitting to being a several-times-a-day addict reader (and didn't tell them my 2+2 login name, which was different than my site name.)

I think I'd only tell more to someone I had had a number of positive exchanges with on here and considered something of a friend.

Why do you need to be so secretive? If someone asks me if I post at 2+2 I always say yes and we usually strike up a converstation. Other people at the table have no idea what is going on and usually dont care. I do agree that you shouldn't be too open about details about the site because we don't need any more n00bs posting about their beats. But if someone asks you if you are 2+2, obviously they already know about the site. You have nothing to hide.

I see no value in asking another player if he is a 2+2'er at the table.
1) you give away information about your game (very little, admittedly, but still no reason to do that).
2) the fish might start looking for another game if they see two players being friendly with one another (collusion, regulers=good players, etc.).

Some guy last night on one of my Party 50NL tables dropped the brown trout. One of the other people responded that he didn't know if it slept in the closet. I dropped the 'sup bro?' and got a /images/graemlins/smile.gif in return. I guess the combo is the way to go.

I think word about "brown trout" is spreading. I had someone use that on me several weeks ago, and I made the canonical response. A little while later, someone else at the table made a move on me that convinced me I had 2nd best hand or worse, and I folded. He commented to someone else, "You gotta keep those 2+2ers honest." I left the table immediately.

However, I don't think "'sup bro?" is a good replacement, either, unless we have a truly standard response for it, and the number of suggested responses posted in this thread alone tells me we don't.

1. I was there first

2. I tripled up on that table

At the Party low level NL tables you can have up to about half the table be "decent" (for some definition of that) and still make out like a bandit.

Chris, sucking out with the hammer vs AA and A2s shouldn't be a triple up you are proud of. :P

At any table you can have about half the table be decent (or better) and still make out like a bandit. However, it's easier to make out like a bandit against 9 morons.

the brown trout line is weird and flaggable. as a random player if i didn't know what it meant and saw people saying it randomly i would be concerned about collusion or feeling left out of some sort of in-joke.

I think you give away more than a litle. When someone notice that you are 2+2 then they only thing is not that they know a bit of your tactics.. You have also become a special person. That mean that from that you have been one at the table, you have now become special. People are looking special on you and then take better reads on you....

Now, I don't care which way you swing it, but think about this:

Sup bro is a common greeting. The true intention cannot be discovered in a simple question and answer.

1. Player 1: "Sup Bro?"
2. Player 2: "All County, etc."
3. Player 1: Whether the first player intended "Sup Bro' as a 2+2 greeting is not discovered until this point (and it still may not be clear).

Instead:

1. Player 1: "Sup Breaux?"
2. Player 2: "All County, etc."

The "Breaux" IS pretty much original to 2+2, even if it is a bastardization of Sup Bro. That is not my fault, we have to play the hand we are dealt. And the best way to play it is "Sup Breaux."

Looks like you missed the point of sup breaux's post (or maybe you got the point and are supporting his conclusion).

My interpretation is not that "sup breaux" is more common. It's obviously not. In fact, "sup bro" is very common, and it might spill over to non-two plus two'ers.

If someone says "sup breaux" you know it will be a 2+2 person and not somebody giving a common greeting.

Yeah I understood Sup Breaux's post to mean "sup breaux" is superior to "sup bro", but I decided to Google it just to see what would happen.

The results were surprising to me, at least.

For those of you too damn lazy to google it:

sup breaux: here's the first link (http://itsecuritysurvival.com/content/view/2747/2/) , 2+2 makes no appearance in the first 10 pages.

sup bro: here's the first link (http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/showflat.php?Number=1351699)

I've had several non 2+2ers ask me what sport I played. /images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Instead of 'sup bro', 2+2ers should say something that leads to the myspace board. Lead bad players to even more bad players.

Is wassssup or wasssuuuup good? I think dragging out the "s" sound or the "s" and "u" sounds make it sound more gangsta. In my experience, I've found the more the words are slurred and made less distinguishable from the correct pronunciation, the cooler the speaker is percieved to be.

Chat from last night:

2+2er: does the brown trout sleep in the closet?
IsaacW: no, but i heard he was all county in 95
2+2er: cool
Tourist1: I think 2+2er and IsaacW are colluding.
Tourist2: wtf?
Tourist2: Does a green cow give blue milk?
IsaacW: indeed they do, but only on Tuesdays
Tourist1: I definitely think 2+2er and IsaacW are colluding.

Note: most of this is paraphrased.

I agree, something that wouldnt lead them here (can't we block searches from finding stuff like "does the brown trout sleep in the closet"?) if not it would be cool if we can lead them somewhere else with the question, but our answer would make it clear we are a 2+2er.

Even after reading 2+2 for a month or so (but not the zoo) I still knew nothing of the brown trout reference. So I googled it, found the appropriate answer at 2+2, and answered.

Any other non-2+2er can easily do the same. I now never use the brown trout line.
