Tonight I happened to be looking to enter a tournament, which I rarely do, and entered the 10k guaranteed at empire. Entry was $55, and they only received 169 entrees. this would mean that empire lost $705, as they had to pay out the 10k.

Does this happen very often? I just didn't think that I'd ever see a guaranteed tournament lose money.

All the time. Look at the ones on Interpoker everyday. They usually have huge overlays.

The 50k used to have a awesome overlay, it's 100 buy-in u remember playing with ~300-350 players. $15k overlay is awesome.

I suck at tournaments but I enter Empire's daily tournament every once in a while when it has good overlay.

With that small an overlay.. good to play in if you normally would, otherwise not a huge deal.

Empire this happens all the time, Party's guaranteed tourneys are a joke, often time with 2-3x the required people to meet the guaranteed #.

You should have playd in the 25K guarantee, it was the same entry fee and had 331. 500 would have met the guarantee, so I figure it had around a 9K overlay.

Funny thing is, I finished sixth and 1250, which is my biggest win ever and I felt like I underaccomplished as compared to the Bodog tourney I won earlier this month or when I've won 1100 or so in, winning the Prima 7500 guarantees a couple of times. I guess that says something that winning is a little more important than the cash.

there are overlays still strewn across the landscape less so since Bonuswhores.com and other sites consolidated tourney schedules for all rooms..making overlays less frequent for the cognoscenti.Since I dont play MTT's much anymore I dont really care about protecting these oppurtunities. It used to be that there were huge overlays in all size buy-in tournies particularly small ones in rooms that were trying to establish themselves.Remember Prima when they first stating marketing their guaranteed tournies 18 months ago?The value was unbeleivable.Other Rooms that have always had good overlays are Intertops,InterPoker, early Absolute,PokerRoom and some smaller rooms now like JetSetPoker and Bodog have soem decent overlays still. My biggest MTT win of $3.5K was one of these pumped up pools. Now must of the overlays worth playing are in the $25-$100 buy-in range. The smallest ones the gaps have been filled.

How is this for an overlay. March 27th $5000 Freeroll. 40 players (registration is closed). Top 30 spots pay. 1st prize takes $1250. I'm looking forward to this one.

Here's another one you will not see advertised much anywhere...
SportingBet.com Poker-this room is a skin of Total Poker,BossMedia's poker site.
This Saturday 03/27 6:30 pm GMT $20K guaranteed NLHE event for $20.00+$2.00-current prize pool is $2,000-only 100 players registered..tourney is till 47 hours away but I doubt more than 500 players will buy-in...Should be an easy 200%-100% overlay.

An overlay in a tournament is far less likely to occur if you mention it here for all to know about.
