You can choose 3.

All of the ones included are post-Jaws. Not every movie he directed is included.

Good thread. Tough one. Some of those i wasn't even aware were his.

FWIW I voted for ET, Jurassic Park, and Schindler's List. SPR is probably fourth, I just have a thing for ET/JP.

He has some rather amazing movies. You have to vote for at least one Indiana Jones movie and Lost Ark was clearly the best. I went with Jurassic Park next and then Saving Private Ryan.

I think Catch Me if you Can and Hook are both really fun movies, though not his best.

And ET will probably get a lot of votes but for some reason I just can't stand that movie.

Wouldn't say amazing, but I really liked this movie alot. Of the people I know, this opinion is the minority.

Seems like it. I thought AI was decent, but the "Spielbergization" of the ending really bothered me. I like Kubrick's dark visions better than Spielberg's happy crappy endings; especially for a movie like AI. Happy endings are fine for something like Indiana Jones.

Yes. In fact you may be the only one on the planet that thought that...unless you meant amazingly bad?

I agree the ending was lacklustre - but other than that Indiana Jones doesn't even compare to this movie IMO. Amistad? Catch Me If You Can? Seriously....

Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan, and 1 of the Indiana Jones movies. I went with The Last Crusade, but easily could have voted for Raiders.

They're not. Spielberg didn't do Poltergeist. That was Tobe Hooper, the director of the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

(FWIW, Spielberg did produce Poltergeist, but this thread is about films he directed).

Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan, and Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Jaws, Jurassic, Empire.

SPR's opening scene was jaw-dropping, but the movie became a cliche after that. Raiders doesn't hold up over time, IMO.

this comment i don't get. what would possibly become outdated about this movie? great story? great acting, directing, etc. no crappy special effects to become obsolete. awesome movie.

Except that the ending wasn't "Spielbergized". The ending was how Kubrik wrote it. FYI, they weren't aliens, they were mecha.

And where's the option for Duel (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067023/)?

Hmmm. I just know I've re-watched both Jaws & RLA recently with my kids, and whereas Jaws remained riveting, Raiders left me flat. I think Jaws has better dialogue - some of Queeg's rants are priceless. There's really nothing memorable in Raiders' dialogue.

Maybe the fact that you see so little of the shark for the first hour or so makes highlights the craftsmanship needed to create the suspenseful atmosphere. I loved RLA in its first run, could be the fact that subsequent action movies have upped the ante so much. Which may not be a fair way to judge it, but all said & done it's not close which of the two I found more enjoyable 20 years on.

If you didn't vote for Schindler's List, explain why. Seriously.

Anyways, my top 3:
1) Schindler's List
2) Jaws
3) Saving Private Ryan

So I thought you could choose more than one. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

It's Saving Private Ryan if I really have to. It was real.

Schindler's List in a close second.

I voted Schindler's List (I don't know how you could not vote for it), Jaws, and Minority Report. Minority Report is a brilliant movie, in my opinion. One of the best of the past few years.

Regardless of this poll, it's safe to say the new best Speilberg movie will be Baywatch! (http://entertainment.channels.netscape.ca/entertainment/article.adp?id=20050322095309990003)
