Not Winning With Conservative Play

Having read HOH, I've started playing tournaments again (I say again because I had played in a few before reading it and had failed miserably). In the ones I have played in, I have had limited success. I can stick around for awhile, but find my chip stack getting lower and lower until I have to go in with a less than desireable hand. During the course of a tournament, I play my good hands to the fullest, in correct position, but still don't seem to be getting the chips necessary to sustain. Should I be playing a little looser?
