Regarding the proposal to make the Yanks/Sox shake hands pre-game...

Discuss.

Duke-North Carolina

Oklahoma-Texas

Packers-Bears

Florida State-Miami U.

Those are just off the top of my head, and I'd rank them ALL ahead of Giants-Dodgers.

It's Yankees/Sox for best rivalry and it's not close. Comparing it with Duke/UNC is really wrong.

The proposal is that some children wanted the Yankees and Red Sox to shake hands before they play (I'm assuming the first game). Bud Selig, Torre are in support of this idea. The whole thing reeks of gayness.

Rivalries that I think are better:

LA/SF
Michigan/Ohio State
Manchester United/Manchester City

Perhaps we need a thread?

It's not a rivalry if one team wins all the time. (One series in 86 years doesn't cut it.) Give me Duke-UNC.

When a rivalry is passed from one generation to the next its a true rivalry. When it causes you to think about family members who died before they got a chance to see the rivals beaten its a true rivalry. Everything else - meh.

Alabama Auburn.

People have gotten killed, divorced, and thrown in jail by other family members over this rivalry.

Only in alabama. Sheesh. /images/graemlins/confused.gif

Ever been to that game? If not, don't slam it. Neutral field, fans split down the 50 yard line. You have to experience it to appreciate it.

The oldest if not the biggest and most intense American rivalry is probably the Yale/Princeton crew rivalry, followed by the Yale/Harvard anything rivalry.
In baseball the answer is obviously Boston/NY, even if it is kind of lopsided for the most part.
I always thought Vikings/Packers was a bigger rivalry than Packers/Bears, but then I've only been watching football for the past 5 years.
One of my favorite historical rivalries was that between the English and Argentinian(sp) national soccer teams following that little scuffle over the Faulkland Islands. It included such great British chants as "Where is your navy? At the bottom of the ocean!"
