Checked to me, I bet, BB folds, UTG+1 raises, folded to me, I 3 bet, he calls.

Turn: T /images/graemlins/spade.gif

he checks, I bet, he calls

River: 8 /images/graemlins/spade.gif

He checks, I bet, he raises, I call

Would you have played this hand differently?

Looks good Owen. The only thing I would consider doing differently is possibly calling the flop check/raise and raising the turn when he likely bets out again since it's heads-up. I don't see any point in 3-betting the river since he likely has the A /images/graemlins/spade.gif.

The only thing I don't like about the waiting until the turn was that I thought I might be able to find out how much he likes his hand on the cheaper street...I thought he would cap with a set...does this make any sense?

I think a set won't generally check/raise and face the majority of opponents with calling two cold. A worse ace likely will though. Of course, a lot of opponents only check/raise really big hands. But I think you're usually ahead and I'd be thinking still of how to get the most money in the pot and not thinking yet about saving bets.
