When the low carb diet craze really got going about 3 years ago, I shorted wheat and corn futures and went long in pork bellies. I then parlayed that into going long in North Sea Brent crude oil futures when we invaded Iraq. I am now waiting for a poker website to start spreading a 5K/10K game so I can take it even further.

Nah, not even close I'm sure, but I have no complaints. I've had reasonable sums of money at times, but instead of doing things like putting it into the stock market or buying property, I continue to flip my money back into tenuous new tech startups. Which means, at some point in the future, I'll either have a lot of money or not.

Having had various amounts of money at various times in my life, I find myself not really sweating how much money I have as long as I have more than I need to satisfy my personal bar for having a "comfortable" life and not having to have a job that I don't like.

Actual rent-controlled apartments are pretty rare in New York. Much more common is apartments that are rent stabilized, which means the rent can only go up a certain % each year. (This % is determined by the city's housing agency each year.)

RustedCorpse's situation is pretty unique. I think most rent-controlled apartments are passed down within families, and they're rarer and rarer every year.
