View Full Version : San Diego vs. Rain

It's lightly raining right now in San Diego. As I was driving home a few minutes ago on the freeway, I saw head lights facing right at me. A car had turned around on the freeway one lane over from me because he couldn't handle the light rain. People in San Diego cannot deal with the rain.

I'm originally from the SF bay area and I am living in SD for college. Northern California doesn't have harsh weather but we get some rain, and when we do nobody panics. When it rains in San Diego the city shuts down.

A few weeks ago after it rained there was a puddle on campus. It was a decent size puddle (about 2 inches deep, and 12 feet wide), but what was amazing is that someone had but caution tape around it. It's a [censored] puddle. You don't need caution tape.

Another time it rained I was watching the morning news and they had a poll of whether or not you would skip work today because of the rain. About 40% of people said they would not be going to work. People just don't know what to do when it rains here. Even if there is a small chance it will drizzle, you see everyone in San Diego carrying an umbrella, which of course they whip out if they feel even a mist. I've seen people in San Diego with umbrellas open long after the rain has stopped just walking around like idiots.

Another thing, whenever it rains here EVERYTHING floods. You cannot get anywhere. This city was so poorly designed to handle any sort of rain.

Changing the order of some of what you wrote.

First:

Might one conclude that drainage problems might be a significant culprit in rain-related auto accidents and not purely driver ability?

In general, I'd prefer San Diego drivers over San Francisco drivers any day. Not sure many Friscans could handle the whole two-way street thing.

FWIW, I'm not a San Diegan...

Just wait to you see a car spin out with no rain!

Clever, but no, the freeway was not flooded... yet. The driver was just a moron.

I find it amazing too. I moved to San Diego from Louisiana in late January. It seems that some people are amazed that driving in the rain doesn't bother me a bit, although I am a little scared due to the idiots who are afraid of a little H2O.

I keep hearing people talk about how its pouring outside when I am at the casinos. Usually it is just a slight drizzle.

for the record... my wife and I are SoCal kids... we moved to Albany for my job in Dec '99. When it snowed 18" on April 9, 2004 we said "screw this!" she moved back to SD on July 4, I stayed to finish some work and moved back September 3. Upsate NY weather sucks arse! Beautiful scenery, decent people, close to Manhattan, but the weather bites bites bites.

Regarding driving in the rain in SoCal... yep, its insane. Its a mix of people that think they can still drive 80+mph and people that think the law says "50mph speed limit if the forecast is for rain" ... not a good mix.

Give us all a break though.. it only rains like three times a year most years. This year has been crazy wet for us!

In any place where it rarely rains, the problem with the roads isn't the rain itself, but all the muck that builds up on the roads between rains, which turns into an oil slick as soon as you add water, making it extremly dangerous. I'd rather drive in a foot of snow than on a wet road that had been dry for several weeks previously.

they're still a bunch of pussies, though.

When it rains, I like being indoors w/ a nice hot cup of tea. Light rain is cool. Crazy thunder-storm style rain sucks.

It's pathetic and every single road in this damn place seems to be designed with the theory that it will never rain and standing water is not a problem. Sunny San Diego has like no conception of it raining this much. It's rained way more this year then it has the last 2 years I've been down here. I moved from the SF Bay Area to go San Diego State 3 years ago and it's annoying as hell.

Then again I've noticed I don't go half as many places anymore to avoid dealing with the idiots. I suppose it doesn't help I live near a mall where it seems the worst drivers accumulate to begin with.

Have you seen the Fashion Valley Parking Lot? You could canoe in it when it rains and it's not even that bad. I guess it's right near the "San Diego River" which also seems to flood its banks every time it rains a decent amount. And when I say a decent amount it's still not all that hard.

Hey passive,
It sounds like you live in mission valley. That's where I live, in a place called the "Promenade Rio Vista." I go to SDSU too.
