if you said "THERE ARE A COUPLE OF CARS OUTSIDE"

what's the maximum number of cars out there?

i voted the mormon grammar one

if there was 3 i would say "there's a few cars outside"
if there was 4 i would say "there's a bunch of cars outside"
if there was more i would say "there's a [censored] shitload of cars outside, let's go blow em up!"

Wtf? A couple is two!!! When you see three people walking down the street do you say, "they make a nice couple."?

It kinda depends on context. If there are 4 cars in a giant parking lot I doubt you would say that there are a bunch of them. I would be more inclined to say there are a couple or a few. If there were 4 cars in a driveway then I would say there are a bunch. I always used couple to just mean a smaller number and didnt care that some people only took it to always mean two.

Whatever happened to just saying the facts? Is it out of style or someting to say "there are four cars in the parking lot" when there are four cars in the parking lot?

BTW, I voted for A couple = 2.

A COUPLE IS [censored] TWO. IF YOU SAID OTHER WISE YOU ARE WRONG AND AN [censored].

My sister and I made up a whole forumula over the course of a long car ride when we were kids.

Couple=2 (BECAUSE THAT'S HOW IT IS)
Few=3
Some=4
Many=5

I'm actually in the minority here: I think a couple != a pair.

There are a pair of cars = 2
a couple of cars/a couple cars = up to 3
a few = 4 to 6
several = 6 to 10 or so
many & a lot = depends on what you're talking about.

If I meant two, I would say two. "A couple" just means plural and less than a few.

Nice to see someone's settled in at their new job and posting again on company time.

Good play!

Just saying "a couple" means two people. But, "a couple of X" could mean 2,3, or 4.

Two. You need to use 'a few' for 3 or 4.

Apparently this is acceptable:

http://encarta.msn.com/dictionary_/couple.html

"1. two similar things: two things of the same kind that are together or are considered as a pair
found a couple of mugs in the cupboard

2. several: a few things of the same kind
There are a couple of things I’m not sure about."
