You missed out the dont care either way option.

I hate Van Halen, guitarist ok but songs suck, they were probably better with Dave but having said that his solo stuff was completly awful so from a songwriting perspective probably Sammy.

Van Halen was better with DLR. With that said, SH had the better solo career by far.

Two totally different bands. Both had their merits.

DLR was a better front man.

As a side note, I was at the very first "new" Van Halen show which was in Shreveport. This was before Van Haggar really took over. They did mainly older stuff so it was awesome.

Believe it or not, Van Halen put on a much better live show with Gary Cherone than they ever have with Hagar. (Never saw them live with DLR, but I've seen several VH shows with Hagar.)

The album with Cherone was awful, though.
