i am looking to get a plasma for my new place and the 42" hd from dell for $2899 seems like the best deal. so can anyone tell me otherwise? i am willing to pay a little bit more to buy from dell because it's a name you can trust but not too much more. and any coupon codes or anything out there to get the price a little lower? thanks.

In the absence of doing any real research, I am always skeptical of products that are the cheapest compared to all other brands. There almost always has to be a good reason.

Dell rules, i would buy it.

i agree. but dell is not cheap because of low quality, and it's a brand name that i can trust buying from.

For any computer device yes...

but I would do my research before I start buying plasma tv's or mp3 players. They aren't quite Sony yet in terms of dominating all electronics.

Um, is that a good thing? Sony has been poor-performing poor-quality crap in all areas (except TVs) for the past 10 years.

Walk man? Discman? Playstaion 1, 2?

I have had a Sony DVD player for 4 years, works perfectly.

Is Sony really that bad?

Sony recievers on the lower end are crap, but they are good on the higher end.
Their computers aren't that great.
Canon > Sony cameras especially on the lower end.
I could go on. You just have to watch what you buy with Sony. Some of their stuff is really good, and some of it is crap.

Playstation 1 & 2 are perfect examples of what I'm talking about. The quality control, especially on PS2, is horrendous. Walkman I'll give ya, but that pre-dates my 10-year criteria. My remark was mainly geared towards digital cameras, computers, car audio, and home theater.

LG is a korean brand which is doing good things for a competitive price in the plasma market. they have a 42 for right around 3k that i like much better than the Dell.

A better question would be "How many have either she or her immediate family bought?". She may throw them out after a year or so.

Considering her bio says:

Occupation A job? whats that?.....Spoiled Princess

I'm guessing a lot.

thanks that avs forum site helped. the room i am going to put it in is kind of long and skinny so when you are sitting on the couch you will only be about 10' away from the TV. which makes me think that the 30" LCD from Dell might also be a good option for about 1200 cheaper. i'm going to look for a dell store and hopefully see them side by side.

Don't be mystified by Dell. They're fine, but no where near the best.

30 inches is pretty small for 10 feet away. I would guess you would be happier with the nonhd 42 plasma (~2K from a bunch of people). If most of your content is DVDs there is no advantage to a HD tv.

30" is small at 10'. i watch a 60" at 10-12 feet and i wouldn't want it any smaller.
