Couple of things that kept me from betting the river was that 3rd spade and the fact that SB was down to a little over $2, so I figured he had to be holding something, even if it's a small PP. Did I wuss out?

agreed. If villain doesnt have a hand, your river bet wont get paid off. If he does have a hand, you lose an additional bet.
