I'm looking to spend 1000 to 1500ish, nothing fancy, just as a poker, internet machine. Gaming is not likely.

So far I have my eye on a Dell Inspiron 6000m for $1049.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Matt

you can probably score a 9300 with wuxga (more than enough to 4-table with no overlap) for 1500 or less

well it does have a 17" screen. It's totally nice.

i like my Dell 700m but it's more of a travel laptop...small, light.

I bought a 6000 recently because it was so cheap with all the internet codes and the discount they were running. I bought it just for poker when I am on the road.

I can 4 table w/o overlap and run PT and GT+ fine. For only $800 it does what I want fine.

Plus how disposable laptops are, I won't feel as bad about chunking it in a year or so when its crap. Like I have before with 2-3k laptops.

If it's just for poker you shouldn't have to chuck it for a really long time.

I am looking at a 6000 right now for $705. The monitor specs say it has a 15.4" UltraSharp XGA display. Is this adequate to 4-table without overlap?

I thought I would need a UXGA or more to 4-table. I am not sure what the "UltraSharp" gets me in terms of resolution.

BusterStacks

no, this is not adequate. you NEED WUXGA

it's not the worst advice but it's certainly expensive. for uxga they still make you get up to the firegl graphics, etc. runs around 3k for a decent system.

You can upgrade the 6000 from xga to WUXGA for 150. I bought one 2 weeks ago and love it. 4 tables, no overlap, like 3 inches on the right of the screen leftover for AIM.

Definitely what I would recommend. I don't think I would go with the 9300 because 17+ inches just seems to big.

I concur. And make sure to get all the options you want up front, cause you really can't upgrade a laptop after the fact. (i.e. video card, screen, processor...)

I'm gonna add on to the people who reccomended the 17" WUXGA 9300. You can find lots of good coupons to bring them down to very affordable prices.

anybody that dislikes thinkpads on any reason other than price is certifiably insane

that's sort of what my opinion was. so i don't understand what was up with the hate from a couple of posters. they're fantastic machines, right? and you can get them with totally sick resolutions, right? and they cost a bit. oh well.

i'm trying to populate a list for research for laptops, starting with a couple of the thinkpads, and the dell 6000, maybe an asus, or an avertec.

'sick resolution' being 1600x1200, and you pay out the nose for it because you end up buying their cad-class systems. it takes 3k to get a good machine with that resolution. 1k less gets you a lot more in about every dept with dell, but it doesn't have the quality. i had a t42p, i have a 9200 now, and i'll have a 9300 in about a month. i definitely miss the thinkpad's keyboard.

If you just bought this laptop, I would consider upgrading your warranty. I would get the 3 year at home with the complete care package. I think they let you do this w/in a week or so of receiving the comp and you can definitely add before getting. It will cost you another 300 but worth it long term. I've had the hard drive die and a month ago i had to have basically everything on the comp replaced. I basically got a new comp for free after having it for 2 years. Dell makes solid laptops but they are rather volitile (like any laptop) and are prone to have [censored] blowing up. Just a thought. And laptops aren't as easy to fix yourself like a desktop.

get the 7200rpm 60g drive instead of upgrading 100mhz for $100. 2yr inhome warranty is worth considering as well.

I wanted the 80gb drive....im almost maxed out with the 40 gigs I have now.

I will look into the warranty.

i didn't buy an extended warranty on my car or my hdtv but i got one on my dell laptop. i generally don't buy them for anything. dell isn't exactly riding a legacy of reliability but their worst days definitely seem to be behind them. it's a huge pain in the ass to ship something to them though, it's worth $120 or whatever it cost to get 2 years and never have to deal with anything other than a phone.
