Hi

(apologies if this is a common question, I could not find anything relevant with the search function)

I play mid-stakes Limit Hold 'em and the occasional NL SNG. However, I am going to the casino for the first time in a couple of weeks, and pretty much all the casino's in the UK are No-Limit or Pot-Limit.

So, what single book would be the best read to convert a decent limit player, so that he can hold his own at NL? I have "No-Limit Texas Hold'em: The New Players Guide to Winning..." on order because I had surplus Empire VIP points to spend. Is this any good?

Furthermore, any general advice about the standard of UK casino games is welcome. I believe the casino will be running a £100 buy in NL Hold 'em. What would be an applicable Party Limit to quickly test my new-found NL skills at? I did try the $25 buy-in, and it felt like a duck shoot (although I was getting dealt great cards).

I've been flailing with SSNL for a few months now, but in the two weeks I've been intensely reading this forum, my game has made a complete U-turn. In a couple of weeks, I have erased about half of my losses over the last six months. (May be blind sh*thouse luck, but if it is it's way out on the curve.)

If I were you I would not bother looking for a book. Print and read every long post by fimbulwinter, soah, The_Worst_Player and Kaz_The_Original, for starters. Their stuff is absolute gold. Reading their posts get you in the mindset of using your entire stack on every street of every hand. Their collective hand commentaries have changed my game.

i was in a PL cash game a few nights back at a casino that got raised pot nearly every hand pre-flop with 70% of people calling, average pot size was unbelievable, unfortunately my set got crippled by the a river card when i was practically all in.

nevertheless, i walked away gobsmacked at the strategies used at that table.

Make sure you stay away from pot limit and stick with the no limit (pot limit is a greater skill game).

If you want to preserve your stack (and maybe double or triple up) get some tight starting hand requirements. I.E High pocket pairs and AK open raise from any postion, play mid-low pocket pairs from mid-late position with a limp or for a small raise (looking to hit a set or fold). Suited connectors from late postion in family pots looking to hit the flop very well or fold (and beware of odds if you play a draw post flop so you are getting odds, not giving them). Know who is loose and who is tight (avoid the tighties uness you have a very good hand such as a flopped set). These are just a few rough guidelines, I have no idea how good or bad you are at limit and how comfortable or lost you feel at the prospect of playing no limit.
