*newbie question*

Hey guys, my VPIP has been pretty low over the past 10k hands or so, about 10%. What is an ideal VPIP for party poker limits of 2-4 all the way thru 15-30? Do the SSHE guidelines generally lead to VPIP's in the mid to high teens? Thanks!

Mine is close to 20, for 2/4 and 3/6. That includes some hands at short-handed tables, but the number would be in the upper-teens even if it didn't.

Less than that is okay too, I think, but 10 is kind of low, in my opinion.

Depends how well you play post-flop. If you're still new, then it might be better to have a lower VPIP (althouth 10 is pretty low even for a beginner) until you understand all the intricacies of post flop play. When you really know what you're doing, you should have a VPIP somewhere between 18 and 21 (seems pretty arbitrary but those are two good endpoints to choose.) Does anybody adamantly disagree with what i've said.

Nothing scientific but I see a lot of the winning players in the 18-24% range...this is at 5/10. I think somewhere in there is about right depending on the table (table VPIP and table PFR).

15-20% is ideal. some will be able to play hands better than others. the better you are the more hands you can play for profit. for example, my vpip is usually about 19-20.

To give you an idea of where you don't want to be, i'm at 12% over 60,000 at 5/10. /images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I'm about 19.5 over the last 10k hands, which is the point I read SSH. You're BB/100 though will rely heavily on your post flop play and your preflop raising. My BB/100 improved significantly in the last 10k hands even though my VPIP hasn't changed much at all.

It depends.

It depends upon your skill level relative to the skill level of your opponents.

For instance against players who fold too much in the blinds, you may find yourself stealing a higher percentage of the time. This will effect your VPIP.

The opposite is also true, against habitual blind stealers you will be defending more often.

Also when bad players limp in front of you, your range of profitable hands is expanded.

Since moving to 5/10, my VPIP has increased 2.5% and I am running near 20% over a small 3,000 hand sample. From what I have been able to discern this jump is because of a larger amount of stealing oppurtunities, and being place in more situations where I have to defend my blind.

So the answer is it is situational. Indiscrimantly playing hands to up your VPIP to a certain level, is a good way to lose many chips. That said 10% is too tight. Work on one sitatuation at a time. For instance in your case I would start with late position hands, focusing on evaluating your marginal starting hands against the quality of the players who have come in in front of you. Another area too look into would be isolation raises, at tables where it is actually possible to isolate.

You are my idol, seriously. I am 18.3 at 10/20, but that's a major improvement from 5/10, where I was 15.x.
