This question came up last weekend when I saw 13 sets of quads in about 8 hours of playing time.

While I realize that the increased number of hands/hour in online poker makes a tremendous difference, this still seemed extremely high.

Is there a simple way to calculate this? Or are there too many variables involved.

Well, the chance of four of a kind in seven stud is one in 595 hands. The point at which you would expect to see 13 of them would be 7735 hands. If you are counting everybody's hands at a seven player table, that would translate to about 138 deals per hour.

Of course, with that many hands, you expect to see 13 or more quads every other time you play. How likely what you saw is really depends on how many total hands you saw.
