View Full Version : Debate: Being a tool vs. being down to Earth

One of my friends and I often run into this situation:

He'll mention someone we know and I say "yea but he's a tool." My friend says "no way, he's like the most down to Earth guy I know." I say, "okay, but you can be down to Earth and still be a tool."

He adamantly disagrees.

Thoughts? Who is right? Also, what is your definition of being "down to Earth"?

Thanks very much.

This debate is not a debate at all. Once clear definitions of "tool" and "down to earth" given, check and see if they are mutually exclusive. If yes, then the answer is yes, if no, then the answer is no.

I think that you're right. I know a bunch of people who are really down-to-earth but I would consider a massive tool.

I agree that it is completely possible to be both down to earth and a massive tool. One has little, if any, to do with the other.

I happen to act like a down to earth tool.

Also, what is your definition of being "down to Earth"?

IMHO I define down to earth as someone with modest standards in life. A person who does can afford to buy expensive things, however remains frugal. Someone that does not have a problem laughing at himself or herself. Someone that does not over estimate his or her importance in life. Someone that does not act self centered. I could probably go on and on. I think by now you might get the gyst.

I would bet it largely depends on where you live. Here in the midwest, we're not hip to the slang from the coasts until about 8 months after it's out of style. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

"isnt calling someone a tool a bit cliche?"

Right, only tools call people tools.
