Neither of these looks like a home game. They involve operating an illegal, for-profit, unlicensed gambling establishment.

Underground unlicensed poker clubs that take a cut for themselves are illegal. This is not a matter of debate.

lol so true, the media LOVES to pump up the story and make it sound like the police busted the biggest dealer on this side of the hemisphere.

I was a member of this club, and was there when the raid occurred. I must say I was angry at first (since I was doing well in the tournament when the raid occurred). But, hell, if they were skimming from membership dues to the tune of $100,000 - then that pisses me off.

The bottom line is that it was a poorly run league to begin with (we went 2 months without any functions, but were still required to pay dues.) They advertised that the winner of our championship (which we were playing at the time) would win a seat in the main event of WSOP. Well, we ended playing for seats to the New Orleans WSOP $1000 event. I played in it anyway, because to me it was still worth it. (They were giving away 5 seats).

I guess my main point is maybe this was a good thing is some ways. Maybe a new and better non-profit club will come about.
