Leonard Cohen is fantastic. His novels are supposed to be pretty decent too, though I've never read them. If you like Cohen, check out Nick Cave as well, also very dark and heavy.

Tom Waits is also a really good artist in a similar vein to both of those, but he's a bit more of an, errr....acquired taste.

You can call me naive, it's ok, but I never knew about Cohen before Jeff Buckley reinvented 'Hallelujah.' Buckley's version is one of my favorite musical pieces in a long time, and while I appreciate Cohen for what he did, I bought one of those 'Very Best You Have To Have It This Is The Ultimate Collection' sort of things, and I just can't listen to it. I appreciate what Cohen did, but as a musician, I just don't really like it all that much.
