When I had dialup (through Netzero) it came with one of those "acceleration" programs that made surfing faster by, among other things, reducing the quality of downloaded images. When I dialed in to netzero, an icon for the program that managed this was displayed on the taskbar.
I just switched to a cable connection, which I'm running now, but downloaded images are still being compressed or whatever. I can tell because the accelerator never worked on secure pages. When I go to mail.yahoo.com the woman's face is all grainy, but when I click on the secure connection there her picture appears much better. So something is still reducing the quality of downloaded images. The icon for the accelerator is not on the taskbar, so I can't figure out what's doing this.
