News to me....it just got posted everywhere @ around 3ish. This AM on the east coast, they were speculating, but it doesn't seem like the actual verdict was handed in till about then, the first Associated Press story is at 3:38 PM EST.

-Nitpicking, but me thinks you're wrong...

Of course I'm just being a jackass here, but I did actually hear it this morning on TV - they were all talking about how the judge just came out and said he's going to give the death penalty before even hearing all the witnesses and testimony and all that.

Without making this too political, this plays into the hands of the anti Capital Punishment view, because to condemn a man to death on circumstancial evidences sucks.

If he dies, he dies.

[/ QUOTE ]

The idea is not that he is going to die. Rather, the idea is that he is going to be deliberately killed by the government after an inherently flawed process condemned him to death based on the beliefs of some people about the meaning of justice. If he dies of natural causes before being killed your post will have some merit.

The key is that he was convicted of killing his unborn baby. Without that victim, he would not have been sentenced to death. Even Californians give some value to an unborn baby. Draw your own conclusions.

He should be killed for the murder of Laci alone. It's wrong that California law requires(I think) a second victim like this for the death penalty to be imposed.

This is why the death penalty is different. Everybody has different perspectives on justice in these cases. Many times views evolve. Once the person is killed new evidence, evolving views, etc... cannot come into play.

Also, the process of "death qualification" in jury selection can serve to put the decision regarding death into the hands of people more inclined to kill. So in death cases we sometimes stack the deck to have the decision made by people who tend to agree with one side more than another. The actual selection process varies and I don't know enough about the process in Petersons case to comment specifically about his case.

Obviously I am against the death penalty, and for more reasons than these. But the question as to whose idea of justice we go by has a little bit more relevance in death cases because I don't think anybody has a perfect perspective. My perspective certainly isn't perfect. But that is why I don't favor the death penalty. Because most people have a more imperfect view than I. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

In most states you actually end up paying more per executed inmate than for someone who does life. Executing someone is [censored] expensive due to appeals, detained time, 'humane' equipment etc.

Yet another reason I'm against capital punishment... although if I was the dad or brother in this case this dirtbag would already be dead. Funny how the government makes it harder for me to feel confident administering justice. /images/graemlins/smirk.gif I guess it's all those OTHER people we have to worry about, not ourselves. /images/graemlins/blush.gif
