Why do dogs butt-skid?

i think most dog owners know what i'm talking about; when a dog drags their butt across the ground, using their two forelegs.

i think my dog waited to do this indoors today on my rug, to get that last little tiny piece of turd she couldn't quite pinch...pissed me off like crazy...

usually it's because their anal glands are full and need to be released. i know this because my wife was a vet tech and this releasing dogs' anal glands was part of her job. for what it's worth, that's also where the band Butthole Surfers got their name.

In my experience it's not that common. I've walked at least 300 dogs so far this year, and they take a dump maybe 10% of the time, and of those who take a dump, I'd guess 5-10% do the but scoot. But of course some dogs are jerks and do it everytime, other dogs never do it. I'd say it's a cleanliness thing.

i think fleas is another consideration
my dog cant reach his ass (or his nuts for that matter) to lick, but ive seen him doing this when he had some fleas. it could have been coincidence and his sacks were full, but who knows
