Would coming out with a pot sized bet on the flop been a better approach?

one approach is 3x raising, which might get the pot there and a free card on the turn.

i prefer that to first barrel

You were not getting the odds to chase on the flop. I would have bet out the flop though. You are only against one player, and the flop has one high card and 2 low ones. Youve got the flush draw, so there isn't really anything for him to draw to so a bet here should take it down unless he happens to have a J. I don't bluff often this early but it seems this would be a good spot. Of course it would depend on my opponent. If he refuses to fold often then I might let this one go.
